I was wondering if it was possible to use a Canon DSLR through either the Canon capture software or Nebulosity without having a memory card in the camera?
Does the camera need a memory card to buffer the information before sending it to the computer?
Just a thought.

There's an option with mine (450D) to capture without a card so should be ok I guess. Think there's an internal capture buffer separate from the memory card. The more technical/savvy can shed more light :)

My 450D via USB to my laptop works. I have a 128MB SD card 19 (L) images. Plug it into my laptop have 4198 (L) images.

Pretty sure it doesn't require the memory card to buffer, and you can shoot without one if you're tethered to a computer. Don't have my camera with me right now, but there's probably a custom function or menu setting on the camera to allow it.

I tested my 450D to the full and can fully operate via the computer without the card. Even has live view which i didn't know until last night. The software shoul be the same for most if ot all DSLR cameras.

On the 20D & 450D under the Shooting Menu (the camera symbol) 'Shoot w/o card' can be set to on. If off, shutter release won't work. Not sure bout other models but would assume the same.

Thanks for the info everyone. Will attach my new 5D to the computer tonight and see how I go.
Thanks
