Thread copy from Cloudy Nights forum.

>From the site:
FACT: 1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency.
Take the online color challenge, based on the official FM100 Hue Test by X-Rite.

0 is a perfect score and the highest is 1241, lower is better.

-----------------------

This is a hue acuity test to gauge your ability to see colour variations etc...

I took the test and scored 99... Judging by the average results on cloudy nights, this just confirms what I already knew, I'm colour blind. :)

Hmm.. interesting test. Not bad, but not as good as I should be, doing what I do! LOL!

Your score: 23
Gender: Male
Age range: 40-49
Best score for your gender and age range: 0
Highest score for your gender and age range: 1212

Interesting to see the chart, so that you are aware of where in the spectrum you are a little lacking. Should help with colour manipulation in PS or whatever.

Nice!! Got 4, but I am a gun paint tinter. worked in a paint shop for 2 years.

I find this test somewhat mis-leading, it is similar to a common trick I like to pull on customers. It is not so much a deficiancy of colour definition, rather an optical illusion.

When you put colour in a gradient situation like that and ask someone to sort them, it is more a puzzle than a deficiancy test. You will find the more you sort / switch the hues the closer you will come.

Try the test again, pick up squares and note the hue, move it along quckly to a new spot. If you can recall through memory the square may "appear" a completly different colour to when it was positioned between two other hues.

It is you brain analysing the grouping of hues, not just the individual hue selected.

So if you are scanning the line, it may indeed look right, yet is not due to this.

Take a look at the brown tile in the center of the top face and the yellow tile in the center of the side facing slightly to the left. They're the same color.

See what I mean? colours are manipulated by those around it. This is not a deficiancy, it's a optical illusion.

The test is reasonably accurate, but thought I would let you know there is more to it.

In the paint shop, I like to illustrate this to customers by shifting a colour chip in between different colours. No wonder customers complain their paint doesn't look as they expected. They will swear the two chips of the same colour are different, they are not, just the coulours around them manipulate their colour in your brain.
Paint companies are also aware of this phenominum and use it to their advantage in their colour brosures.

If you don't believe me about the cube, take the pic and edit it, take the dropper, and select the brown tile then the "yellow" tile they are the same colour.

Tried it on two computers - 59 on the older lappy and 12 on the new one - go figure?

Lumen Miner
10-01-2010, 11:20 PM
Here's another version.

The blue tiles on the top of the left cube, are the same colour as the yellow tiles on the top of the right cube.

Edit the image and select a blue tile from the top of the left cube, drag it across to the top of the right cube next to a yellow tile. Watch as your brain switchs its colour as you drag it... FREAKY!!

WoW! Looks like the oldies ( ;) ) are leading the ranks. Interesting, I wonder if there is a significance to this trend.? Hope more reply to the thread.

Edit~ After much correlation of results I find.... There is no trend. :) Except that perhaps hue definition, is not degenerative with age.

I'm colourblind, as are most of my brothers, my father and my mother's brother. I didn't really stand a chance. My score is a lot better than I expected :D

Wait till I start processing my shots in LRGB. I'm sure they'll look just fine (to me)

Hah that just comfirms what I always suspected. My right eye sees colour washed out whilst my left eye sees colour rich and vibrant. Score for right eye was 33, for left eye was 1. Guess I will have to put a patch over my right eye when using photoshop ;).

PS: age range between 40 -49

wow I attempted it twice and my best score is 70 :/

Based on your information, below is how your score compares to those of others with similar demographic information.

Best score for your gender and age range: 0
Highest score for your gender and age range: 1520

I scored 19, in the 30-39 female age group (just).

Interestingly, I can see colour in some nebulae. Probably related to viewing and transparency rather than my eyes. Or my brain percieving what my eyes tell it they can detect.

31 for me in the 40 -49 group.

Looks like the purple coloured ones were my downfall. I also left my glasses at home today, that's my excuse. ;)

Well, as time goes on, it seems that the scores get better. I had a score of 11 at age 67. Will send it to an excellent photo colour printer, and see what he and his team score.

AlexN
11-01-2010, 10:26 PM
mmm.. I've been tested by 3 different optometrists, all with the same outcome... for you at your age to score worse than me, I'd imagine that you suffer the same condition I do..

Just remember, it makes you a rarity.. :)

Well I win ,
I have bad colour blindness, have known all my life.

I scored a 276 in the 30 to 39 year age group.
Good test and thanks for sharing.
I only use to use the old numbers, letters that were hidden in all those dots tests years ago, I could never get past second or third page and my brother would breeze through the whole book.
I should write up a dot test with my eyes and see hows many people would get it :D.
Alex would probally pass my tests .
It has not caused me too many problems as I still see all colours just in a different way.
I have it in most colours with the blues, reds and greens most prominent.
Funny thing was many years ago we were watching a show on TV and they were testing the latest military camo gear and had several soliders in it and the were lined up with a jungle back drop, and the reporter said he bet anyone that these soliders could not be seen from 100mts away.
Well everyone in my family could not see them but to me they looked like they had fluro clothes on .
Bad thing was the army use to use us aliens to spot the enemy years ago in jungle war.
It usually skips a generation in our family so my kids will be OK but my grandkids will probally get it.

Matt.

Nice one Matt... Yeah my first test was with a dot test.. Got 4 or 5 pages in, had my sister wizz through it like it was nothing.. Sure did feel stupid at the time.. (Being 5 and not realising that its a medical condition, not "Stupid")

I too see camo clad soldiers against bush backdrops as "High lighted" They sure don't blend in with my vision... Same too, Red/Green prominent with issues in blues/purples etc..

I can only imagine the responses of everyone on this forum if I got into image processing with my mixed up colour problems, I would probally be chucked of this site :rofl:or locked up or something.
I will just stick to my video system and visual for now and maybe get into narrowband or S/nova hunting down the track.
I have played around with some data in P/S in the past and what looked good to me made my friends puke :P.
If it looks good to me then thats all I care about.
My early primary school teachers use to hassel me till my mum told them whats was going on.

Wow, I got 0, apparently I have perfect colour vision. Given how much sunlight my eyes get abused with (sailing, windsurfing, gliding) I am actually shocked. My eyes feel weird after doing that test though...

This is actually a useful tool to me. Part of my job is training people in workplace incident investigation, and I use a number of tools to show people how their perception of reality can be fallible. Here's a classic example - Same Colour Illusion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same_colour_illusion). Cheers for the link!!
