Canon 450D with IS 55-255mm + circ Polarisation filter. My first attempt
at surfing shots with the gear I have. Mostly shooting into the sun not
long after sunrise. I spent about 3 hrs shooting these surfers. I must
admit I had a heap of fun. Perhaps next time I'll shoot in the afternoon so
wont be shooting the shaded side.

Anyways thanks for looking.

got some nice action shots but as you said a little more light would be awesome.. the clouds make it dull too so on a clear day I think these early morning shots would be awesome!!

great work!!

which shelley beach is this at?? near Ballina??

Hi Josh,

Thanks for your comments, I'm itching to try again. And Yup! it's the
Shelley beach near Ballina. Went down again today for a swim and
a snorkle, it is beautiful in the water but the swell at 1m there were
no surfers to be seen.

I assume you are staying near the coast because mallanganee is a long drive to shelley's!! If you get the chance go to the base of lennox head (the actual head not the town..) when the swell is up and you will get some very sweet shots on a crisp morning!! you will get the sunrise, as you will be facing north, behind the surfers!!

I have yet to show the motivation to do it but next time I am home for sure will get off my as.s and do it.. when I house sat my parents place over christmas/new year it rained for most mornings so couldn't get up there.... =(

if you are keen and a little crazy flat rock snorkling is good.. otherwise just walk on it at low tide and you will see plenty of cool things!! only a walk to the other end of angels beach too so not far at all!!

It's a long drive, but about the same if you were in Sydney's western
sub's and were heading to Bondi. Except the scenery is tops! all the
way.

It's about an 1 hr 20 min drive, a bit faster if you can do Mallanganee to
Lismore in 45mins . Actually will be heading back there to tomorrow
taking my boys to the beach. I will take a drive up to Lennox Head and
check out the Base as you have suggested. I was up there a few weeks
ago but stayed at the southern end.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your comments, Actually I had a funny experience last week
down at Evans Head. I borrowed a friends boggie Board and headed for
some teenage years boggie boarding like a pro.... only to find my aging
body found it pretty hard going just getting out past the first few
waves let alone out to where the action was lol... need to get fit again.

It's my NY resolution, since I've already given up the smokes.

Cheers, thanks for look'n

You've done well for your first attempt at surf action Rob.

This stuff is addictive, I took my eldest daughter with me one evening last year to try and shoot some surfing action but unfortunately it was too dark by the time we were ready to shoot and the photos weren't that good.

It was fun though, it's really exciting to watch them and now I'm itching to go back and try out my new 7D on the surfers.

Looking forward to more.

Andrew,
thank you for your comments, it is encouraging. It surely is addictive.
What was meant to be a few snaps turned into a 3 hr shoot. I think I
rattled off about 400 exposures and kept 122. I've been back 3 times
since but the surf has died so not too many surfers. There will certainly
be more. A petty we didn't live on the west coast. You could do
morning shoots and not be shooting into the sun and not run out of
daylight. They are exciting to watch alright, I've found myself looking
in the used dept in surf shops at surf boards. Looking forward to trying
again and will post them.

Simon,
Thanks man, I brought a boogie board on Tuesday. I hit the waves at
6am this morning at Shelley beach, however my endevours to work
the board like the pro I was when a teenager was sorely misjudged
I think I need to get the fitness up and lose a few kg's lol. Still I
managed a few rides today. Anyways I couldn't resist since watching
how much fun these guys are having.

Cheers,CS and thanks for looking!

great pics mate

where you shooting from the reef in front of the break ?.. it looks like speeds ,, very fast and hollow as it breaks on a nice flat reef .

Next time your down check out the next headland to the north (trestles)
well its not really a headland anymore, more of a big flat parking area
..lol....theres some great spots to shoot from there.

Thanks mate! and cheers!

Yup that's right, the tide was mostly out so I was able to get right up
on the reef/rocks.

I'm going to be down at Shelleys tomorrow morning at around 5am for
more photography and swimming/boogie boarding. So I will go up there
and have a look. Not much of a swell at present so maybe not too many
surfers. If your into an early morning swim come on down bro. I'll be up
on Shelleys lookout first up, sucking coffee and hoping for a good sunrise
in anycase it quite nice to watch the sun bip up out of the sea.

I'll pm my mobile

Cheers,CS
