So I thought I'd try it again; this time from Australia. You have
better skies down there this time of year than does Idaho!

I love all the colors in the dusty areas.

So it was 'our skies wot done it gov'. Nothing to do with skill and equipment.

The dust looks really good to me Tom. Kendalls? cascade is clearly visible as well.

Lovely image Tom and so deep. The dust is the highlight for me. I was overwhelmed with the amount of dust I managed in a much shorter exposure but this is definitely something else again. Beautiful.

Tom, I've been wondering, In your image (and a few others I've seen of M42) there is a small reflection neb (I think) below M42 near the bottom edge of the field of view, a small redish/orange section nestled in the dust. Do you know the designation for this little area of the image?

I've seen it in 3 or 4 really deep images of this area of sky, and it seems to be different colours in most of the images.. I've tried but never captured it myself.. Maybe next year.. :)

There are a remarkable number of cataloged objects near the star v1133 Ori and one is this reflection nebula. Rather than trying to list all the interesting objects, here is a link to all the cataloged objects within 10 arcmin of v1133 ori.

Fantastic FOV there Tom, not only is it a great piece of work as usual but the FOV makes it a unique shot of m42 and surrounds actually. Your faint dust processing has come into its own too, very cool

Interesting to compare our interpretations too :)

I just can't figure out for the life of me how you managed to arrange for increased illumination behind the entire nebula for a 8 hours (1250 years ago....)

Stunning and inspiring work - thanks for showing.

Tom,

Eek, I missed out on this one.

Holy moly. Your image has a very 3D feel to it -- it's almost like as if the M42 area is a depression in a much vaster and expansive region of dust.

You can just imagine how incredibly bright the stars in the Trapezium must be to illuminate such a massive field.

The mind well and truly boggles.

Thank you.
