Northern Hemisphere coldest on record for 100 years

I was watching the news last night and it mentioned that Northern hemisphere is the coldest in 100 years :windy:, Is it coincidence that about 100 years ago sun spot activity was going through a long minimum.

I think it is something to do with changes in ocean currents due to fresh water changing ocean temps and therefor affecting the oceans currents like what was shown in the Day after tommorow.

I called some of my family in Scotland who said the sand was rock hard on the local beach because it was so cold -20. Don't miss at all. Enjoy the Aussie climate too much. :)

So if it's the coldest on record for 100 years then they are assuming that +100 years ago they had even COLDER temperatures??

Wait till the Thames freezes over!

The Thames used to freeze over so solidly there were circuses complete with elephants on the ice.

It's still a lot warmer than it was in recorded history.

+100 years ago they didn't have good thermometers so we only have descriptions, not numbers.

The Fahrenheit scale was invented in 1724 and the Centigrade (aka Celsius) in 1742 and the thermometers worked pretty well. The first thermometers date from the 11th Century, but were not that good. Once they got the idea of sealed thermometers around the mid 1600's, accuracy became quite good. (Do a google with key words like "thermometer", "invention", "accuracy" etc)

This place we call earth has been doing this hot and cold stuff forever, it just happens we are in the middle of it, and everyone freaks.

Yep we may get hotter or colder, that is nature.
