I'm new, and I've had this question coming up every so often for the last almost 10 years! And I want an answer

When I was 9 years old in 2000 we went to Arcot Station, out near Texas in Queensland. And I saw the weirdest thing, I still remember standing staring at the sky in utter disbelief.
A ginormous thing that locked like a rock with a (I think if I remember correctly, it was a long time ago :P) tail that was white/blue? It was quite faded and I'm pretty sure it was fairly early in the morning as I was the only one awake. I remember thinking to myself I should tell someone to come see but I was just transfixed staring at this..thing...

Does anyone know what the heck it was? Am I even in the right place to be asking? I thought I need to start somewhere, so does anyone have ANY clue how I can find out what the heck I saw?

Do you mean like a meteor? Maybe you can find out from your folks exactly when it was and punch that into google as well, see if anything is written for that time.

I had a google on the date and location you mentioned and I found this must be the same event

Texas [Queensland], Saturday September 2 2000, 8.00pm
A young man sitting in his car on top of a high mountain peak near Texas was looking north when he saw a very bright light. It was perfectly round, appeared to be 15 to 20 miles away at an elevation of 20 degrees. He observed it for 25 to 30 seconds and during this time he also watched it through binoculars. The object made no noise and was stationary when first seen until it left at a speed much faster than a jet. The witness spends 6 months of the year in the bush but has never seen something like this before. He described the light as having the same brightness as Venus, and noted that it was travelling on the north-south RAAF flight path.

it was definately not that. It was daytime when I saw this and it was one big round thing traveling horizontally and quite slowly. It was not a plane or anything that I've ever seen before.

One of the most remarkable bits of film from the 1970's.

I love that footage of the Teton fireball. Almost as good is the one captured by the police camera.

Hi Katie,

Maybe you saw a bolide (see for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrL-cWaYdno). The word bolide comes from the Greek bolis which can mean a missile or to flash. The IAU has no official definition of bolide and generally considers the term synonymous with fireball. The bolide term is generally used for fireballs reaching magnitude -14 or brighter.
