Gibraltar Creek.

Humayun and I have been getting together a bit now and then and sharing tricks. What a way to improve in leaps and bounds. When you get together with others, it is a fantastic way to learn instead of going it alone. Where one person lacks in skills, the other makes it up and shares. Humayun has such a great knowledge of his camera, lighting and exposures and I an so glad to have met him.

This afternoon we drove out to the mountains southwest of Canberra, to Gibraltar falls, then climbed down the goat track into the creek below and waited for the failing evening light.

There's a couple of shots I am happy with out of my camera, the EOS 400D with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Onya Baz,

Any chance you can fix the rotation on the first two images to level the horizon, so to speak? Also, I'm surprised that those two are in focus considering you just plonked the camera down and shot. :D

The second shot shows us that if we had some more time, we could have gone a little higher up (somehow?) and photographed that nice fall up there, as it's quite a lot wider. Perhaps even used a longer focal length just to concentrate on that one curtain of water rather than getting an entire scene. There's plenty there to keep us going. Looking forward to a sunrise shoot there!

I will have to get a copy of Photoshop Elements and see if we can take your originals and give them a bit more of a boost. I'm also surprised that you've got blue coloured water. None of mine had that. But, that could be because I was using a polarizer on the lens? You'll have to get one -- they help cut the glare off wet foliage, rocks and allow you to "see through" the water, as it were and obtain even richer colours.

Your composition on the third image is pretty much spot on -- it was that shot that I used to compose my own. Good eye. :)

I see the first one is off as the leg of the tripod was down in the water. The second one is actually about right I think. The rocks were all sloping down to the left.

I had a repro of my favorite though and applied the golden colours i so love in your photos Humayun.

What do you think? Better or worse?

Looks like a great spot, guys. Something does seem a little off with the WB. The first 3 seem a little cool, and that one in post #4, while not as cool, does seem just a touch off as well.
