Sun Filaments via PST

Our first attempt of sun filaments with the Coronado PST and DBK 31 Webcam

Pretty good for a first attempt, Trent and Julie. Thanks for posting. Can you tell us about the exposure details/frames used/software etc? I am considering a PST with a webcam shortly and am trying to get an understanding of solar imaging.

170 frames from a DBK 31 Webcam with the following settings;
Exposure time 1/13 sec
Gain 328
Brightness 1
Gamma 1

Images captured with OEM software, stacked in Registax, Processed in CS3

A piggyback barlow avaliable from starizona was required to achieve focus in the PST.

Great image. A bit more detail than what I've managed to get. I use the PST with a DMK21.

Well done Trent & Julie on your first prominences! Maybe capture 500 frames and stack about 300 to get more detail. Looks a hell of a lot better than my 1st solar image. Next stop Active Region AR11039 on the south of the disc at the mo.

Stephen - best camera for solar imaging is the DMK21 camera. The monochrome chip is more sensitive than the color. high frame rate - 60fps and good price.

We had a shot at this active region however of the 5 minutes of video we took of it, some cloud came in to spoil the most part, thus only 130 or so frames were good..... so consequently the active region just seemed to blend in to the rest of the disk,

But yes we agree 100%, that more frames will be required to get more detail out of the proms.

It seems that longer exposure times are required to even see the proms than that required for active regions....

The forums thoughts on this would be appreciated...

Yep when you see an image of a prom and disc chances are there are 2 seperate images joined together. Lower exp for the disc and higher for the prom itself.
Best way of getting disc exp right is to look at the histogram while youre capturing. adjust gain or exp so that the main peak is about 2/3 toward the right.
