Mars in IR with animation Morning Dec 27th

Hi All,
Up early this morning to image Mars, from just before 2 am CSST finishing up just after 5 am CSST.

The seeing initially was pretty crook at about 3 / 10 and only improved marginally over the session to maybe 4 / 10.

I did capture 4 RGB's but the seeing never reached the level required to produce a result that I would post here.

Captured 6 IR images over the session and 4 of them are reasonable and are included in my animation which represents the rotation of Mars over a period of 2 hrs 40 min's.

I have also posted the final and best IR image of the session along with a labeled version of the same image for comparison.

I've yet to image Mars this apparition. Conditions here in Brisbane have not been favourable.

Hopefully I'll get a chance over the next few weeks while on hols...

Good work again Trevor, thanks for the view.

One time all that could be picked up on Mars was the polar caps and Sytis Major, now there is so much more that amatures can resolve with their equipment. I will have to brush up on the smaller Martian features.

Thanks lester, it really is amazing what can be detected on Mars with amateur equipment. These images are not very good, because of the very poor seeing, but they still reveal some reasonable detail.

I just noticed that I didn't put in the ID line for Mare Tyrrhenum, maybe that may prompt a few to look at a chart and track down its position in the image.



Thanks Matt, Mars is close to its largest diameter for this apparition and achieves its highest altitude above the horizon by about 3 am CSST in the morning, that is at the moment.

We all just need some cooperation with the seeing to snaffle some descent images, good luck with that.

Thanks Troy, hope the weather improves for you. I think animating Mars, over a reasonably long period, provides a more dynamic overall effect.



Thanks Frank, the best seeing I have had for this apparition of Mars was on the morning of Dec 23rd. It was good enough to produce some very nice RGB images. I have attached a link to that thread. The seeing was about 6 / 10.
