Ok so i got a 200$ York Voucher for chrismas, and i have been browsing there site to see what i should get, i may be able to add a little bit on to the 200 if required.

All i have ATM is the 8" Dob with the default EP's and now many books.

Cheers, and merry xmas to all.

Get a better EP than the ones that come with it. That would be money well spent imo.

Happy Christmas by the way

Vixen LV 12mm eyepiece. Or the 10mm if they have it.

I was thinking of going either for the Vixen 12mm and then use my boxing day savings for 2x Omni Barlow at 105$ since i don't have one yet. or i was going for the 15mm SW wide angle, but after a bit of reading the Vixen sounds better.

One thing is that vixen says "A wide field of view with the apparent field of view of 72 degrees can be obtained." but its FoV (deg) is 65?

Either way looking forward to getting something new.

I'm fairly sure the AFOV of the 9mm through 25mm LVs is 50 deg. Yes, not wide, but nice glass for the price, good eye relief compared with equivalent plossls, nice size and nice looks. Mainly for Moon and planets but OK for anything else where FOV is not a problem - eg. planetary nebulae.

By the way, I'm sure the LVs are discontinued (in favour of the better, but more expensive LVWs) so stock might be hard to come by. Others, even in Australia, advertise the same eyepiece for less than York's price.

A good wide field 15mm would be a very valuable addition.
I know the others will poo poo this, but I love my GSO 15mm superview. It got a very good comparison review in Sky and Space a couple of years ago. Cheap, but not nasty. You'd have enough money left over for a barlow then too.

I am with you Jeanette, there is a lot of bang for dollars with the GSO EP's, although the early 26mm were a little scrappy at the edge. Having said that I would sell the gift card, save a bit and purchase a 17mm LVW Vixen EP (sharp edge and beaut contrast) from OPT in the US. ($289.00 USD). GSO Barlows are very underated on mid F/L's and matched up this would be a good jump off combination for a reasonable investment.

A decent collimation tool if you haven't got one...otherwise ditto with jeanette!

Go shopping on Astromart, a few dollars more will get you a Nagler or Pentax

Not necessarily in this order, but I'm with a lot of others:

1. Ditto, Jeanette's idea.
2. Telrad?
3. Collimation tool

I'm with you Jeanette - I have the same eyepiece and it's a great all rounder.

Depending on how you are faring at the moment I'd look getting at a red dot finder (to supplement your magnified one).

Hi there,

Collimation tool would be my number one option for a newt if you dont have one already. Otherwise a telrad is a great investment.

Cheers alex.

I agree with Alex. I have used (and still own) the three manual collimating eyepieces for years, but would probably consider a laser collimator if I owned another newt.
