Here's another one from Wiruna. 20x60s on Orion. I shot in the breeze for this one at the beginning of the evening so I lost a lot of subs and could salvage only 20min. Didn't realise until looking closely at the subs. Still turned out alright considering the integration time. There's a full field here (http://www.multiweb.com.au/astro/HS3_M42_f.jpg). [2.9MB] . Wish I had done some flats though. All the brown neb around is starting to show so I'm confident that in the future with 5min exps and above and lot of them I'll be able to bring up a lot of data and improve contrast dramatically.

Heeey, that's great! The brown dust is certainly there. Awesome!

Great picture Marc ... so much from so little and all as good as it can be. Bet you cant wait to add more data later.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah I'm getting pretty excited about finalising the rig now and putting through its pace. I'm particularly happy with the stars in the whole field. I don't have to battle as much as with the newt when processing. :)

Marc,

These images are fabulous. I may think about a C14 with hyperstar.

Thanks guys. Yeah it's getting there and looks promising. Just some practical issues to sort out now when on the field.

Awesome Marc...

My only nitpick would be star diffraction patterns.. I suppose there is nothing you can do about that... However, nobody can deny that for only 20 minutes of exposure, that is utterly insane.. Once you get your flats sorted out you'll be pumping out some ripper shots for sure!

I'm still yet to get the deep Ha surrounds of M42, even in my most recent attempt a year and a half ago, which was 2hrs Ha + 4hrs OSC I just got hints of it, and it was noisy... Yours looks brilliant.

Thanks Alex. Agreed. The cables although better arranged are still "all over the place". Once I square 'em out it should be cool. That's an insane 20min though hey? ;) Once I'm in a position to flat field and calibrate I wanna push this baby to 5min even 10min subs.

This stuff sucks light like crazy. I have one of the LMC/Tarantula area that shows stucks of reddish neb everywhere in front of the spider in the black/dark area. I'm checking with a couple of mates though coz I've never seen it before and want to know if it's real. I'll post it later on.

I recently imaged the tarantula at F/4.8, and got a fair few dark nebulae that I had to confirm with other images... It was 12x10min subs and I'd not seen the dark dusty spot in other images... I dare say what you've captured at F/1.8 is the same stuff, just probably a lot more extended..

I'll probably attack Orion this season.. I've been avoiding it, but I'll probably do it.. If I do, I'll shoot a bunch of 20min subs at F/4.8 and see if I can catch the same amount of light in 2 hours as you got in 20 mins...

Mate, with that FOV and speed and when you are happy with getting good focus, guiding etc you just gotta hammer a few nights out on this field :eyepop:

Looking good for so little exposure. The Hyperstar lens works a treat. Now you know why I love the Tak at f5.

Sounds good. Mosaic time!

Thanks Mike. Yeah looking forward to it once I've ironed out a few bugs.

Thanks Doug. It does work really well with the C11. I love widefields and being able to do it with a large aperture scope is even better. Your FSQ106 is a dream scope but unfortunately not the stuff that I'll be ever able to buy.

Marc that's a fantastic shot for 20 min mate !
Once you get flats working you'll be laughing.

Looking forward to more.

Marc,

Holy moly! 20 minutes. Yikes!

We gotta get you out to some really dark skies and go to town on Tom's dark nebulae!

Well done, mate. Really looking forward to finalised/calibrated images.

Top stuff.

Outstanding image Marc. Will keep my eyes open for more of your DSO images with the Hyperstar.

All the best.

Thanks for the encouragement Andrew. I'm sourcing an A3 EL-sheet or bigger now to fully illuminate the aperture of the C11. Once I have calibration sorted out I'll be cooking. ;)

Thanks H. Should be cool. Really looking forward to it. I'm trying to make sometime this year to go to coonabarabran with a couple of mates from the ASNSW who do regular trips there.

Thanks Lester - glad you liked it.

Great result with the Hyperstar lens Marc. Looks nice and deep for only 20 mins worth of data...

I can only imagine what a couple hours worth will manage to bring out. :D

Great stuff.

Hi Marc
top quality shot given the exposure time.
I have been wondering how Hyperstar performs and have been looking to see if anyone has paired it with the new Celestron HD optics.

I will keep an eye on your future posts to see how this comes along. Well done.

Martin

Thanks Martin. There is indeed a separate Hyperstar that has been developed for the HD/aplanatic Celestron SCT range. It's also slowly making it in the Meade range.
