View Full Version here: : I hate clouds!

Today, after waking up I saw that there were absolutely NO clouds in any direction, the sky couldn't be any clearer! I was telling my parents how perfect the night sky will be for my first ever observing session with my brand new 6" Dob telescope. Being excited all day, getting the telescope ready, aligning it doing everything I could so I would get the best and enjoy my first night, observing the skies with a telescope! My parents said they were going out somewhere, and I decided to go with them, as a nice gesture. I step outside (this was about 6:00pm) and see one or two clouds in the sky, but nothing big, no worries! We go pick up some pizza (sooo nice!) and go to eat it near the water, overlooking the sea. I get outside and see now quite a lot of clouds in groups, I start getting worried, but my father said not to worry because they were blowing out to sea. Sure, okay. Next thing I know we are heading back home, and on the way home (after some very nice and relaxing time) start seeing clouds EVERYWHERE! I start getting annoyed.... Next thing I know I am home, I look up to the sky, and can't see any sky at all, all I can see is clouds thick as thick, covering basically everywhere :(
I HATE CLOUDS!!!
If you agree with me please say so on this thread, or post stories or comments, thanks :)
CLEAR SKIES!

I hate clouds aswell. My first official day of 5 weeks holiday and you guessed it, it rained on and off since 3am. We have cloud here still and a tiny glow of lightening a little to the north of us heading across towards Bundaberg way.
I am hoping for at least a week of clear weather during the next 5 weeks and preferably while my grandson is here. I have got him a pair of binoculars hoping that he might show a little more interest in astronomy than the last time I bought him a telescope.

yep we are suffering up here in Newcastle. i went around to Alan Meehans - we set up a dual bar setup and got everything ready. then we looked up and saw a whispy bit of cloud off the coast - 15 minutes later we were wall to wall cloud. from beautiful blue clear sky.......

Queensland Astrofest, 3 years ago. I had my son Jack with me. We'd just been enjoying the views through a beautiful big 30" dob. We'd climbed down the ladder and were crossing the field to look through a 25", By the time we'd walked the 20 meters, the sky went from clear to totally clouded. Super fast clouds.

Thanks for posting in here :)
I agree clouds are very annoying, and can destroy a wonderful night sky and make us astronomers grumpy and annoyed :(.
To Adrian-Good on you for trying to get your godson into astronomy, and best of luck :) I hope that next time that you go on holidays that you have better luck with the skies
To David- Their is nothing worse than that I can imagine. Only thing to do is be patient, patience is a virtue, but it is so annoying, :(. Best of luck with the skies next time, hope it clears up, over in Newcastle :)
To Jeanette- Also good on you for introducing astronomy to your little son, I hope he enjoys it, and wish you the best of luck  At least you got a bit in :) And a 30" Dob!?!?!?! That's amazing!!!!, Must be quite a load to carry and set up :)
Best of luck to you all:thumbsup:
Clear Skies,
Sebastien.
I don't think you ever look at clouds the same after being hooked by astronomy. A few light fluffy cumulus clouds are of no concern, but at the first sign of any cirrus cloud appearing (let alone rain clouds) my face starts scrunching up. :screwy:

Sabestien,
Hi, there is a phenomena known as new scope cloud cover. It doesn't matter what the weather pages show or anything else.
First set up of a new scope, you can almost count on it.
Like you said, best be patient, you will have heaps of fantastic fun with your 6.
It's a rule in my house, pizza for dinner is always followed by coke and icecream spiders. Enjoy one of those while the clouds are around.

Haha, Rob :) that's for sure, even when I was observing with my binoculars, I started to feel hatred for the clouds, I don't mind them at all during the day but at night, they better clear out, or else.........;)
And to Darren-:lol::lol::rofl::rofl: Absolutely love it :) What a joy it would be if there were no clouds at night (and light pollution for that matter ;)) And I must say, I love that rule of yours, I followed every bit of it except for the icecream spider part..damn! :) Please forgive me, haha:)
Hope that the sky clears up!
Clear Skies,
Sebastien:)

Hi Sebastien,
We all understand your frustration mate -- don't worry about that.
If you hate clouds, then I say: Welcome to the world of the amateur astronomer. Get used to looking at the sky far more frequently and wondering "gee, I wonder if it will clear up tonight ..." be prepared for your hatred of high-level cirrus clouds that seems to serve no purpose other than to ruin your life.
But, at the same time there will be nights, so many nights over the years to come that the unsullied sky will make your soul sing for joy as you navigate the Universe.
You've just got to learn in the end, to take the good with the bad ...
And BTW, in Sydney, October, November and December are the cloudiest months of the year at night.
It could be worse (much worse actually) ... you could be living in Melbourne.
Best,
Les D
pgc hunter
20-12-2009, 12:17 PM
Catastrophically worse actually.
Melbourne averages 0.0000076 clear nights every 10 billion years. I truly, madly, deeply HATE the climate here with an unparalled passion.

When you think of the Gold Coast, you think sunny skies and wonderful weather... NOT!!! It has been forecasted that it would be raining and cloudy most of the new week!! And all I got to see from my dob was a star because that was the only thing visible for days... A single star!!!
Hope the sky clears,
Tony

Thanks everybody for all these wonderful posts :)
First of all (here goes my essay again......:D)
1-To Peter, yea, that must be really annoying too :S, I guess that we just gotta take it in, and be patience, but at least you got the sun:lol::lol:
2-To Warren- That was a terrific post, enjoyed reading it a lot, kind of moving too:) Thankyou.
3-Haha, Thanks for welcoming me :lol:, I am sure though that those clouds made a sure welcoming to me last night :lol: man, last night I didn't go to sleep until 4:00am:rolleyes: I kept going outside to check how the sky was holding up, but the clouds didn't want to move, :cloudy: and I can already feel my relationship with the clouds startting to become a very bad one:lol::lol:, but then, when it is a cloudless night I will probably say to myself "All worth the wait", lucky I don't live in Melbourne then:thumbsup:
4-:eyepop::eyepop::eyepop::eyepop::ey epop::eyepop: 0.0000076 clear nights every 10 billion years:eyepop::eyepop::eyepop::eyepo p::eyepop:
WOW!!! well best of luck with those nights:thumbsup::thumbsup:
5- To Tony:)- Man, at least you got that one star in!!, I still haven't seen anything (except a lamp post when I was aligning my telescope:rofl::rofl: )
Well to all of you, best of luck I repeat BEST OF LUCK with the skies:lol::thumbsup::thumbsup::thum bsup:

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with clouds.
First is hate. Purely because I was looking at the sky on the 19th (saturday) and I was thinking... Wow look at that, not a cloud in the sky, perfect! Going to be good viewing tonight at Linden. Then the wind changed directions. THEN THE CLOUDS CAME!!! No blue sky to be found. I was quite disappointed to say the least, since i have not been to a dark sky for a while.
The love. Well I think clouds are great, because sometimes they bring rain. And rain is good during a drought, and bush fire season.
Was trying to think of somthing funny but theres nothing funny about this love/hate relationship.
Irony is, it has not rained yet!?

I usually hate clouds too, but it's been dry here since June so I like them at the moment. Casino had 89mm of rain yesterday and 15mm so far today.

hmm, that's exactly 98% more clear nights per year than Melbourne. I might put your idea into practice.
I don't like clouds. Period. The only acceptable form of cloud is of the Magellanic variety.
I'd probably like clouds more if I lived in a place which averages more than 1 minute of sunshine per year. The forcast for next Saturday has gone from "sunny" to "partly cloudy, isolated showers clearing" :mad2:
sebastien
21-12-2009, 10:09 PM
haha, yep, I also have a love-hate relationship for clouds :) How far west do you recommend to go? But in the end we need clouds, but sometimes, they are just the worst thing that has happened all day and year for that matter :) Wouldn't life be good if it could only be cloudy during the day time and never during the night!?!?! Anyway, catch you all later and best of luck with the skies

To the anti-point of Melbourne on this country. I believe that would be Exmouth, WA, which coincidentally also happens to be one of the sunniest places on this land. Must be the 4000km linear distance from the nearest Melbourne cloud slate-grey stratocumulus that is so famous to those whom inhabit the tundra of southern Victora.
Funnily enough, last 2 nights were clear, but you guessed it, I had work....and I get off on the 23rd and once again, you guessed it, at that instant the weather is supposed to turn to crap.
With the average annual cloud cover of Venus and average year-round surface temp of Pluto it is generally not found near the top of my list of 'likes'.
