View Full Version here: : How do you ship bought and sold stuff?
Hi,
when people sell and buy large items off the forum here (and elsewhere), how do you ship the items? As I understand it, Australia Post only handles items up to a certain size - which isn't actually all that big. So how would I get, say, an ETX125 complete with aluminium case delivered?
All thoughts or suggestions gratefully accepted.
Cheers
Aust Post will handle any size to a limit of 20ks in weight, so the box can be a as big as you like if you stay under that weight.
Other than that I usually use a trusted courier service.

Leon,
ok, thanks for that - I thought their limit was a good deal less than that.
Cheers

he shipping weight is work out in 2 way which ever is larger. Actual weight limit to 20kg's and dimensional weight which is L x W x H x .250 or .333 (can't remember which).
Also Length not exceed 105cm and girth 140cm
There is the old joke about going into the Post Office with a huge balloon full
of Helium, tying it to the scales and then trying to convince the postmaster that
since it weighs a negative amount that he owes you. :)
Though 20kg is the limit, posters should be aware that there is a maximum size
that the Post Office will accept over the counter, which is that if the object is
a box, the longest dimension must not exceed 105cm and the girth, which is
found by measuring around all other dimensions, should not exceed 140cm.
When posting parcels, one should be aware that volumetric weight rules often
apply. For example, they might measure the dimensions of a box, assign it
a volumetric weight of say 10kg even if the box itself only weighs 5kg.
So alas, this is how they catch you out if you try and post the giant Helium balloon. :)
For many items, the post service is often hard to beat for price, reliability
and delivery to all destinations within Australia.

I agree Gary, but you need to be careful on what you send & how it is packaged.
I sent a STEEL water dispenser from Brisbane to Melbourne. Packaged in a carton with internal styrofoam packaging & inside a 2nd carton.
Total weight was approx 18kg.
Insured for $500
It arrived totally destroyed.
The carton was severly damaged & torn apart.
I happened to be in Melbourne so I collected it & brought it home with me as luggage on the plane.
I took it back to the post office & the insurance claim was refused. They say because it was insufficiently packaged in a SECONDHAND carton.
THe bloody carton LOOKED secondhand because of the damage it sustained.
I went to the Postal Ombudsman & after about 6mths of "investigation" they upheld the Aus Post decision.
The ombudsman relied 100% on the testimony of the postal worker that inspected the damaged package. They did not look at it themselves.
So I end up with a $500 pile of junk & had to supply a new one to the customer.

Most courier services require long term use and is not effective for one of deliveries. I think there is some one off courier but not sure.

I used e-go for my last sale, - I was happy - very cheap, but be careful, they are so efficient that they picked it up before the bar-coded delivery labels arrived in my email, so one box was a late delivery, because the sorting had to be done manually.
But, if you are looking for 100% security & are willing to pay big time to ensure that nothing will get broken, use PackAndGo. They will inject a foam mold around your OTA which renders it near bomb-proof (and you can use the shaped foam for a storage box inner afterwards)
