Saw it on the news tonight. The first thing I thought of was put it in neutral and turn the ignition off but he apparently tried that.

I dont get it, how can you not turn off the ignition (diesel?) or put it in neutral, surely these arnt totally under car computer control ?.

Thats rediculous and scary :P, ive never seen a control system that didnt have an off or bypass switch (I have an old car). Not being able to turn the ignition key off is sheer engineering arrogance, and dangerous :screwy:............. OK, maybe you lose power assisted steering and brakes, and perhaps lock the wheel?, maybe thats why?, anyway, sounds daft.

You should at least be able to force it into neutral so you can at a minimum use the handbrake.

When the clutch linkages broke in my Kingswood approaching a red light I could still push it into neutral and stop the car.

Drive by wire
In cars today the ignition switch goes to the computer and automatics gear change is electronic and controlled by the you guess it the computer and the computer is always on, no off switch so if it goes mad you coud be in deep shxt

mmmm, I remember another "drive/fly by wire" thread ;), methinks this going to extremes, for a device thats designed to a price and potentialy driven by L platers/drunks/hoons/backyard mechanics(modifiers).

we are an hour an ten years behind the rest of the country though .. so maybe half an hour to find the handbrake and brake pedal isn't really to bad when you think about it.
