I've decided to put my toe in the waters of AP. I am flogging some current gear to pay for it.
I am contemplating some sort of reflector-based astrograph (refractors are too much $$ ) along with a 70-80mm dual-purpose guidescope (WO, AT, used Tak?) and possibly a solar setup (PST? Lunt?)as well.
My friend abroad wants me to 'source' him a very specific refractor to replace one he smashed. Numerous alternatives exist, and he might have to settle.
But on which one? budget is mid - high 2's
This forum is filled with "Which telescope should I buy..." queries.
My question is this:
Is it actually more fun, or at least more satisfying, to HAVE to make a decision about what equipment to buy, rather than having enough dosh just to go out and get whatever you like?
I admit that another $5k wouldn't be a bad thing, but on the whole I find saving for, and deciding on, equipment based on that budget, quite fun.
The thrill of the chase so to speak.
You?

While it would be nice to be rich, I think gear is appreciated more when you have to spend carefully. I gave my GSO dob it's annual service a couple of days ago and found myself marvelling at what a beautiful, simple instrument it is - it's a lot more than just a cheap telescope to me.

Our scopes are our windows to the Universe.
I've loved all my scopes, no matter how poorly made they were.
My little 60mm wobbletronic gave me so much joy.
But the rule of thumb when you're getting serious is to buy the best you can afford.
If that means 2nd hand, great. We're all rather precious about our instruments so you'd rarely find a dud in the classifieds.
