How's this..? Doing a Sidonio on a 23 year old negative :D
Given this is a subject of choice this time of year I decided to tinkle with this old scanned negative. The Pentax series of lenses were pretty good, this was taken wide open at F4 (although I have cropped the vignetting off)

Here is me with the setup:

That's a wonderful shot Mike! You've been in the game for so long from the film days where there was no room for mistake. I can't even contemplate or imagine what it would have been like to only have "one chance, one shot" at it. Guiding goes off and your 40min sub would be ruined, correct? We now live in a digital age where we can shoot, delete, reshoot, edit. You must find this really easy now with all the new gear and automation these days no? Again, terrific shot.
He said he did a Sidonio on it !!
Seriously though, that's terrific Mike.

Lol! yes a lovely shot Mike!
I would have loved a 6x7 pentax back then!
I done some fiddling on some old Halley shots the other day just for the heck of it!

Ah yes the trip down memory lane was fun.
Marc: The quality of shot possible now days is incredible compared to what we thought was impressive back then. Yes the technology now is great, autoguiding was a chore for sure, having one's eye glued to an eyepiece for an hour at a time can be a drag but of course we knew no better so that was just how it was
The change in image quality possible is no more astonishingly illustrated than when we compare these two award winning images for their time, the same object, similar apperture and focal length and both 35mm format sensors/film:
1984 (admittedly - scanned from a poor quality print): http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/66994039/original
2008&9: http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/97061387/original
Gary: I could never have afforded that setup either but I won funding for that camera and two lenses for my School in Canberra in a science competition where I entered a series of panel displays documenting various aspects of astronomy through my astrophotography. It was the equivalent now of getting say..?..an FLI ProLine 16803 or Canon 1D MKIV and two ED telephoto lenses :eyepop: so I was very lucky to have such equipment at the tender age of just 17 - Shame it is still at the school (I assume) as I would love to try the lenses now with my ProLine 11002. I too imaged Halleys with that 6X7 and lenses, you can see them here:

** Now, all you other jokers: What's wrong with my appearence :mad2: huh? I was a nice slender type back then (a mere 100kg) and I cut my hair short now cause I want too (lazy) not cause I am going bald

Yes speaking of looks on one's faces, that 17 yr old kid you see in that photo couldn't have had anything further from his mind at the time than that which would be on it some 17 years later (and 30kg heavier) in 2001 either !

Please do, would be cool to see

Nice one, hey I see a drive corrector that looks exactly like the one I used to take astro images now :) The mount has a familiar look about it too. Gee to think I use gear thats nearly as old now LOL.
The advances over just 25 years are pretty astonishing. I don't think you could even find any large observatory class image from 1984 that would match your modern Centaurus A image!

I think you are quie right Kal, while David Malin produced a very deep B&W amplified (but burned out) version there is no full dynamic colour image that goes as deep from that era or even now for that matter?..at least not one that encompases the entire galaxy? Here is Davids amplified image compared to mine:

Here is a photo of the very night I took that 1984 Centaurus A image:
