I've tried something different with the data from Snake Valley, I wanted to do more aggressive noise reduction on the raw frames before processing them in registax just to see if I could still get a good result.

It seems to work, I think there's a bit more detail visible now than in the last set.

great stuff bird.

What did you use for the noise reduction, and how did you do it?

How many frames?

G'day Matt.

I use commandline tools from the netpbm toolkit (netpbm.sf.net). Usually I fiddle around with one of my raw frames until I get the sort of effect that I want and then I write a script that processes all of the frames in a batch. I've usually got around 6000 frames, so it can take a while sometimes :-)

Today I experimented with a gaussian blur followed by a fairly aggressive unsharp mask on each raw frame, then load them into registax and go from there. I was sort of hoping this would kill off some of the 1-pixel size noise and make my frames a bit nicer for registax to process.

Took a few hours to run, but I like the result so I'll definitely try this again in future.

Bird, your last set of results from this capture seems to have more detail to my eyes. But then the sizes of these new images are smaller. But they are all outstanding images.

now that's what I call "going that extra mile":prey2:

..and I thought just running raw mode and aviraw was getting fairly full on!

brilliant pics Bird,as good as anything I've seen this season even on mars observers etc.

Bird, I'm not an expert but at the 10 o'clock position just off the limb, is that olympus mons?

Thats a wonderful image. I especially like the increased image scale on the left. Very good considering we have a not so good apparition. I can only image what your images would look like if we had the 2003 apparition again. Should be interesting to see your result of Jupiter this year. Personally, with the planet at 78 degrees (I think) us southerners have to lead the way on imaging this time around. keep them coming mate.
