Thank goodness that artists such as Janis Joplin lived in an era where raw musical talent was much more important than the visual aspect which dominates todays' music.

Imagine Janis trying to break into the music world today.
We would never have known her talents.

A few yeards ago this band (I think they were a NZ Band) went on tour in Aust, it was called the Pink Floyd show or something like that. They had all the gear and did the best bits from all the albums and it was just great. Mind you it would have been better if I had them to myself in my softly lit living room just enjoying the atmosphere but you cant have everything right.

Hi JJJ & All,

Amen -- what a voice! One of the most memorable of the 1960s and early '70s -- but in California Dreaming, she really only sang backing.

Try these for a sample of her out-front versatility:

My Internet is capped at the moment, so can't click the links, but, I'm assuming we're talking about musicians.

As such, I'm going to see Dream Theater (again) on Saturday. And, one of my other favourite bands, Pain of Salvation, is opening for them. I can't believe they're finally coming to Australia, and I'm so looking forward to it.

Anyone who likes male vocals, must, and, I mean, must check Daniel Gildenlöw out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1QO1daK688

0:52-1:28 -- my goodness!

How's that for a voice? In all the musical journeys I've taken, in my estimation, no-one comes close to Daniel's voice. One moment, it's sweet and mournful, the next, is a full on power/metal growl. And, everything in between. Such a beautiful natural head voice, too. Four octave range. Unreal.

He's also a brilliant guitarist, and, their music is just so varied. Two of their albums, Remedy Lane, and, The Perfect Element (Part 1), are rated #1 and #2 at progarchives.com -- high praise. Both brilliant concept albums.

Furthermore, watch their rendition of Leonard Cohen's famous piece from a recent concert, here (view right to the end to hear his vocal gamut):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0puyJsSHjs4

Daniel's performed backing vocals and guitaring for Transatlantic, when they toured Europe, and, has also worked on projects with high profile musicians such as Arjen Lucasson (Ayreon, Star One, Ambeon, etc.)

Anyone in Sydney who'd like to see them, get your tickets for Dream Theater, for just $60. They'll be playing at Hordern Pavillion this Saturday evening.

Technically impossible music created by virtuoso musicians. Can't beat it.

Enjoy.

Regards,
Humayun

Thanks Les.
I used to have a video, a biography, of the Mamas and Papas. Made by them.
The time Cass turned up with a pint bottle of acid. My lord. They spent that Summer writing their first album.
Or when Cass accidently got hit in the head with a metal pipe, and all of a sudden she can hit the high notes and they give her more songs to sing.
I'm amazed any of them are still with us.

FredSnerd

Michelle Phillips tells this story where they were down to their last $20 touring in South America with no way of getting back to the US so they decided their best chance was to bet the money at the casino and chose Cass to roll the dice. None of them had ever been in a casino before. Cass threw 18 straight winning dice and won them more then enough $$$ to get them all back home safely.

Reminded me of something else, I saw the Australian production of The Who's "Tommy", Daryl Braithwaite, Colleen Hewitt etc etc and Keith Moon as the wicked uncle. I also remember seeing "The Valentines" and the lead singer was?

and continuing in the they do make still make them like that

Imelda May is pretty easy on the eye for my money

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf34PBw8Zx4

it was the introduction of widespread RBT's and tough DUI laws in 80's that killed the scene, not pokies, they just filled the empty bars with them

my theory is thats why the dance music scene/ecstacy ect. took off soon after, the kids could have a good time and still drive home without severe penalties.

yep when the Italian american mafia ran the music biz in 60s, they were the best days, then the corporations took over, they wouldnt employ risky people like joplin et al these days, too safe, we wouldnt have hendrix without mafia ect. anyway those people paid a VERY high price to be that creative and original like syd ect. , who would want to do that?

Tom Waits in Melbourne on two separate tours the venues were The Dallas Brookes Hall and The Palais.
At the time of one or both tours he featured on The Paul Hogan Show and on The Don Lane Show, he was smoking, Don Lane attempted to catch the ash as he gesticulated and Tom Waits dropped the line "Christ! your just like my mother" and to a heckler at Dallas Brookes his sharp reply was, "YOU SIR! have the IQ of a fence post".

Thanks Jeanette for He Ain't Heavy - A beautiful song, so appropriate for so many reasons, including myself.

This is one of my all time favorites. A one-hit wonder from a South African group called Osmosis. This clip is a montage created by a fan, because a video clip didn't exist at the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EmntlxTcPc&feature=related

Another favorite is LA Woman - The Doors. Unfortunately the 1985 Video clip which Ray Manzarek produced to accompany the song some 14 years after Jim Morrison's death, is hard to find.

Here is a link to the song and the lyrics, which will make it easy for people to understand that Jim is singing metaphorically about the sordid city of Los Angeles, not necessarily a female.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUdhA8JAV0A

If I can find Ray Manzarek's video clip, I'll post it.

Enjoy!

How many of today's artists would be recognized and honoured by the sciences. Take the great Frank Zappa as an example.:D

"Scientists from various fields have honored Zappa by naming new discoveries after him. In 1967, paleontologist Leo P. Plas, Jr. identified an extinct mollusc (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Mollusc) in Nevada and named it Amaurotoma zappa with the motivation that, "The specific name, zappa, honors Frank Zappa".[238] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-237) In the 1980s, biologist Ed Murdy named a genus (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Genus) of gobiid (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Gobiidae) fishes of New Guinea Zappa, with a species (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Species) named Zappa confluentus.[239] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-238) Biologist Ferdinando Boero named a Californian jellyfish (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Jellyfish) Phialella zappai (1987), noting that he had "pleasure in naming this species after the modern music composer".[240] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-239) Belgian biologists Bosmans and Bosselaers discovered in the early 1980s a Cameroonese spider, which they in 1994 named Pachygnatha zappa (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Pachygnatha_zappa) because "the ventral side of the abdomen of the female of this species strikingly resembles the artist's legendary moustache".[241] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-240) A gene of the bacterium Proteus mirabilis (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Proteus_mirabilis) that causes urinary tract infections was in 1995 named zapA by three biologists from Maryland. In their scientific article, they "especially thank the late Frank Zappa for inspiration and assistance with genetic nomenclature".[242] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-241) In the late 1990s, American paleontologists Marc Salak and Halard L. Lescinsky discovered a metazoan (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Animal) fossil, and named it Spygori zappania to honor "the late Frank Zappa ... whose mission paralleled that of the earliest paleontologists: to challenge conventional and traditional beliefs when such beliefs lacked roots in logic and reason".[243] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-242)

In 1994, lobbying efforts initiated by psychiatrist John Scialli led the International Astronomical Union (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/International_Astronomical_Union)'s Minor Planet Center (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Minor_Planet_Center) to name an asteroid (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Asteroid) in Zappa's honor: 3834 Zappafrank (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/3834_Zappafrank).[244] (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/#cite_note-243) The asteroid was discovered in 1980 by Czechoslovakian astronomer Ladislav Brozek (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Ladislav_Brozek), and the citation for its naming says that "Zappa was an eclectic, self-trained artist and composer ... "
