Just downloaded Susan Boyle's album - and wow...

What a fantastic debut, and just released a week ago. Her voice is almost angelic in its quality. The choice of songs suit her abilities brilliantly, and if you hear her voice without knowing or having seen her before you'd think she was in her 20's or 30's and on her way up. Way up.

I thought that she did well in Britain's Got Talent, but that was just a precursor to this. Amazing....really. :thumbsup:

I found her on iTunes, but I guess that there are alternative ways to hear snippets and download the album if you don't have it.

She won't appeal to everyone's sense of taste, I know, but it'd be somewhat unrealistic to try and say she isn't any good...

She's not to my taste, but that's just a personal thing.

I like the story of her success, though. I'll never forget the look on the judges faces when she began singing:eyepop:

Yes, I agree, she is not to everyone's taste, but I like to think I enjoy an appreciation of all music, and from what I have heard, I would enjoy her music on the CD player as I'm relaxing about the home and garden.

It'll be an interesting ride for her, that's for certain. The album's ultimate success will not stem from the usual mainstream reliance on the "pop hook", but from the quality of her own unmodified voice. Some critics already say that can't happen and tht she will be short-lived in the industry. I'm betting that these comments are coming from those that didn't think to sign her.

I have not heard her sing but I believe she has a lovely voice. From what I have seen on TV she is not exactly photogenic which can be a problem these days. However I remember a singer from the war years named Kate Smith who also had a great voice. I believe it was her that inspired the saying "The show is not over till the fat lady sings"

You're right Barry - and they actually managed to portray her nicely on her cover. She's no oil painting, granted, but she certainly looks better than she did when she made her first television appearance. :lol: She actually looks happy.

My wife has this CD and already my life is misery....she plays it everywhere, car, home....

Although I like some of the songs...it does get a bit "over the top" when played 24/7....well not really ...but it feels like that.

I must have done something bad in a previous life ...or it's "payback time" from her!:lol:

LOL! Same for any music I'd say. I know that I made my parents life a complete and utter misery when I discovered Pink Floyd in the 70's. I played DSOTM at least a thousand times a week... :lol: ... for months.

Yeah, I bopught the CD. Wild Horses is quite a stand-out.

and while I don't normally like hymns, "How Great Thou Art" she almost sounds like one of the women from Clannad.

And "Cry me a river"? From that example, I'll bet she can sing smokey jazz perfectly.

Well there is the Ella Fitzgerald story. The way I heard it, the fashion in jazz was changing from no-vocals to having vocals, so Chick Webb sent out some band members to look for a singer and someone found Ella. Chick's reaction upon seeing her was 'You're not putting that on my bandstand'. The band member threatened to quit if she wasn't given a chance so Chick said she could have one night - and the rest is history. She became known as 'The first lady of song'.
