...dear collegues,

with my head hanging in sadness I must bring you words of what was to
anticipate and yet came so soon.
Daniel Marquardt, 27 years of age, passed away about 1h30a.m. (U.T.)
this night.
Dan was suffering from colon-cancer, based upon colitis ulcerosa.
after surgical removement of the prime tumor, some filiae showed up in the liver,
and these have been inoperable for many reasons.
from august 09 to suturday night, Dan was kept alive artificially
by means of high tech medicine.
however palliative therapy granted enough time for him and his family to prepare
for the inevitable.
Medicine managed to keep him free of pain and fully conscience so Dan
took his final steps in this life on earth
in majestic dignity when advancing the border of physical life.
Dan was accompanied by a friend and his parents within the last hours.
For the kind support and friendship of many of his astro-photographer-
mates, Liz and Karl-Heinz express their sincere gratitude!

Oh my god. I am absolutely devastated by this news. I meet Daniel at AIC back in 2008. Such a talented and passionate imager, one who's work I found inspirational. I was aware of his battle with illness, but was not expecting such a quick closure to a young life full of enthusiasm and positivity. Thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

This is terrible news.

My condolences to Daniel's family and friends.

Dietmar, if you don't mind explaining and if it's not rude of me to ask, what was Daniel suffering from?

Regards,
Humayun

hi guys!

thanks for all the condolences you have expressed here.
for some reason only half of what I have written was displayed in this thread...
I have edited the thread now and would kindly ask to read once more...

I am sorry to bother this section with this message, but on the other hand, he was
a most gifted astrophotgrapher in deep sky and he was the founder of
europe's first remote observatory - a pioneer in this field!
thank you all!

The loss of someone so enthusiastic from such a nasty disease at such a young age is beyond tragic.

Terrible terrible - another reminder of the fragility of all of us.

His works speak for themselves as to his ability - his deep deep images were one of the reasons I am on a faint dust search - a talented and innovative guy.

And a man with a sense of humour as well. I direct new imagers to his site when the are building up target lists to try for his easter bunny nebula.

Hi Diets
I only found out today, it is very sad that somebody so young and talented should have their life taken away from them so prematurely. Sometimes life is so unfair. My condolences go to you and his family
Kindest regards
Gordon

The AIC Board of Directors have minted a new award named, after the famous Seven Sisters in the northern sky, the Pleiades Award.

Like the brilliant star cluster that inspired its name, the Pleiades accolade will be bestowed on the very brightest, most exceptional imagers who are either youthful in years or relatively young to the endeavor of astro-photography. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage those few outstanding individuals who do not yet meet the criteria for Hubble status but demonstrate skills and personal qualities that were the early hallmarks of people who subsequently received astrophotography's highest honor after many years.

Accordingly, the Advanced Imaging Conference Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we recently informed Mr.Daniel Marquardt of our unanimous decision to enthusiastically name him as the first recipient. We're also happy to report that Daniel (and his family) was delighted when he received our news! A picture of his plaque accompanies this article.

It's a shame when anyone dies so young from something they have no control over
