Got this in my hotmail inbox the other day .

Like I'm going to fall for that old ripoff.

I've asked Mr Ibrahim to kindly send $1million dollars in hard currency by EMS post to prove he is legit.

Bet I never hear from him again .....

I have been promised $3 million from an estranged aunt's estate if I marry in the next three months. If your million comes through, I'd be willing to marry you and then go halvies in the $4 mill, ok?

HilB...

OK ....

But only if my wife doesn;t find out.... I don't think she'd be very impressed even if she got to help me spend my winfall ....

I reckom we're noth going to remain poor, that's a safe bet.

And people still fall for these scams.
I find it very hard to feel sorry for them.

I've linked this before, but if you want to see what you can potentially do to these Nigerian scammers, go to www.419eater.com

One of my favourite web sites.

If you only just received one of these emails, count yourself lucky. My parents were first contacted via fax, in 1993, with the same proposition.

Yep that's really believable. :screwy:

Save the postage and buy a $2 lottery ticket, the odds are way better.

I'll be buggered !! he responded:

Biut no indication that he's going to send me 1000000 USD cashb in a nice parcel by EMS .....

Came with an attachment "bank details" , which I will not be opening .... I'm betting the attached file has a nasty hidden data mining program in it .... good thing there are no tax , financial or criucial personal details anywhere on my computer (too easy for these to be got at "invisibly".

As if I'm stupid enough to buy this.

This is where I pass the emails on to the Australian Federal Police (yes I know they are toothless tigers).

I get those in the junk mail now and again Ian - noticed a few more recently. The scammers must be doing a 'surge' at the moment.
Those crazy Nigerians tried to get me via ebay recently (well 2 years ago!!)...
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=24305&highlight=nigerian+scam+ebay
Doug

ps...just had a horrible thought!!!!! The scam I linked to above happened on ebay where the scammer posed as a buyer in a "buy it now" sale. The scammer bid on the 'auction' thereby ending the sale. The horrible thought is that via the ebay system they had access to my name and location (not too difficult to search for an address) and bank account details to deposit the money that was never to come !!!!
That's an identity fraudster's dream come true, and it's so open to potential abuse!?

Thankfully nothing dreadful has happened so far...but now I've put it out there into the Universe!!!:scared2:

Fools and their money are easily separated .... I don't have any sympathy what so ever for any greedy cretins who fall for this kind of scam.

The only genuine thing is the info about the air crash--it really did happen.

JUst a quick note to you all regarding this sort of thing and internet scamming in general; don't ever ever reply to any of them, even if it's just to tell them to take you off their list.
you see, the thing is that if they get a response, then they know the address is checked by someone (rather than a 'dead' or bot-account), which makes it about 50 times more valuable to them if they're gathering email addresses to sell on to other companys (cyber telemarketers, and such) at least this is what we were always taught, and it makes perfect sense.
Hmm, Dugnsuz, you make a really good point regarding these guys getting your details off E-bay...
hey, quick question, if it's not getting 'too' off topic; I've known several people that have been really blasé regarding the whole identity theft thing, since they've claimed that as they only have $50 in their accounts, that that will be 'all' the crims can get. if they can get your bank details, is it likely they can get more important things?

That was my worry too Lorraine. I would have thought that with the information gleaned from ebay they might be able to use it to acquire other items in my or others' names thereby obtaining a more complete false identity picture. From there the scammer could go on to apply for large loans etc. Not 100% sure if that would be possible, but the thought gave me a quick shudder!!!
