OK, time to see how close we get to the truth.

We know that the new GS 16" truss dob is coming soon but I thought it might be a bit of fun trying to guess when and how much.

Just place your guess of time and price above and we will see how close we can be when it is finally released! (if ever!)

Maybe we can get Mike to entice Andrew's to throw one in as 1st prize in the XMAS comp ????;) He'll just have to put a raincheck on it when it becomes available.:nerd:

A prize!!!! Geez, I'd even settle for a picture of it at the moment!

Nah Geoff, I'll spend the money on setting up Tracking an EQ for my 12". (well that's the theory)

What about an eq16 truss design Ken..........

If you look at Andrews pricing on the other dobs, isn't there some sort of pattern going on there?
6"-$299,
8" - $399
10" - $599
12" - $999
Therefore a 14" - $1599
16" - $2399
Or it could be
14" - $1799
16" - $3399
I voted differently in the poll, but have decided that it will cost $2399.

Is this a guessing game :confuse3: ? Or are we trying to use covert and subliminal methods to advise Lee & co, how much we're prepared to spend :prey: in the game of aperture chasing?

i think it is a guess, only time will tell :wink2:

From the look of the responses, I think this is more of a wishing game than a guessing game.

yeah, 30" folded offset optics that all you have to do is stand or sit, all for $1999.99 postage included and free naglers ;)

It would have to be after Chinese New Year, as they have to load the containers and then ship it down which they wont even contemplate until after the month-long festival, so I'm guessing April at the earliest. As for price, no idea really.

You won't need any guests when you have a 16" Dob to keep you company. :D

I'd take any advertising with a grain of salt, especially with regard to when things are available. I know at least one dealer here (admittedly in competition) who regards the current ad as somewhat wishful thinking... time will tell

Guys,
I would remind you that there is a exponential curve of weight, size and usability which says the bigger the scope the more difficult it is to transport, set-up, use and generally there's much less observing ( with amateurs) with big scopes than there is with say 10" sizes.

I speak from my own and others experience with 333 and 450 dobbies!

It's a big extra mouth to feed!!!
My base board is 10Kg, the rocker 18Kg, the mirror 14Kg, the mirror box 18Kg etc etc, all up about 80-85 Kg... it all adds up!!!!!

I have in front of me the may 1999 edition of Sky and Telescope. In the Editorial Leif Robinson ( the Editor no less) predicted ' The ETX/ Autostar concept will go down as the greatest happening in amateur astronomy yet'. pretty gutsy prediction but alas wrong. The greatest thing to happen to our great hobby is Chinese and Taiwanese telescopes at a good price. They might not be the greatest 'scopes in the world but with good optics and great prices they have opened up astronomy to the masses.

I for one am looking forward to the GSO 16" that's a decent sized scope and I bet it's at a decent price.

Got to disagree with that one - the Autostar caused a mighty explosion in astronomical interest. I have many mates who have become involved entirely due to that little box, and of course it's now standard on all higher end Meads. Using the tours, they have learned far more than they would left to their own devices. Best telescopic innovation of the 20th Century easily (digital photography not being a telescopic innovation). Many cheap dobs endup gathering dust after seeing the moon and planets.

Don't get me wrong though - the driving down of prices by GSO et al has been fabulous to us all - how long have we waited for some real competition in the market!

I hope for a sub-2000 euro (so lets say under 2400$) scope ;) somewhere in March.

Anyway, I hope it won't be to expensive, 16 inches of raw mirror will then be in my limit (though I still like my 12" ;) )

When you've used a 16 incher you'l finda 12 incher is no competition;)

I am just glad GAA bought our 18" scope when we did, otherwise we would still be waiting !

well waiting for the GSO to materialise probably wont happen for a while while Meade have cornered the manufacturer. So the GSO is vapourware, thats why i just bought a Meade 16" lightbridge

I am sure you will not regret it, there is no substitute for Aperture
Welcome to the big Dob club ;)
