Where do you guys observe?

Backyard? What's your backyard like? Do you have to shift around the backyard to look at different areas of the sky? Are you light-polluted so bad that you have to get out of town to observe?

Do you always go out to a dark sky?

Where do you go when you want a good dark sky night? How far from you home?
Do you spend hours out there? An all-nighter?

For me, I don't get much of a chance to go dark sky observing as I've got 3 young kids and my wife doesn't want me jetting off every weekend :)
So I do most of my observing from my backyard.. the light pollution isn't too bad directly overhead, but most of the horizons are either fairly washed out by sports ovals down the road, or they have big gum trees obscuring most of the view.

From my backyard I get a fairly good view over the roof of my house out to the east and north/east, so it's been a good time to catch the planets early in the morning, though I've found the seeing conditions are terrible if I observe over the roof of my house. You only have to watch this avi (http://www.iceinspace.com/images/images/planets/20040917-saturnmov1-3.avi) to see how bad it is sometimes (that was taken using the movie mode of my digital camera, compress 2 times over - once by the camera and then again converting it to avi).

If I go into the back corner of my backyard I get a fairly good view of the west horizon, though there are 6ft fences and big trees which often obscure my view, so i'm always shifting around.

If I do want to go dark sky hunting, i'll try to go up to Mangrove Mountain or Sommersby, only about 30 minutes drive and far enough out to have a much darker sky and no pesky trees on the horizon!

Usually i got just out my back yard, i live about 30-40 kms out of melbourne city so the light and pollution arent too bad. Ive got a mountain local to me which is great for viewing stars, only about 20 mins drive. Gotta watch out for the couples smootching in the cars tho :P

Hi I observe from my back yard in Glenore Grove SE Queensland about 1hr west from Brisbane. Nice dark sky except for some sky glow in the East from Brisbane but only to about 25degs up which does not lend itself for best viewing anyway.
Am in the middle of building a roll off roof observatory . Considered all designs but due to my dark sky I like to be able to see the entire sky . Why block a beautiful view with a dome and small slit if you don't need to.

heh yeh, and when they turn their lights on to drive off it'll ruin your night vision! :)

Good point, if there's no neighbours lights or anything else you need to block out, you may as well give yourself the whole view of the sky!

You'll have to post pics of your progress!

Backyard for me. Skies aren't terrribly dark but they're still pretty good for my area. Can't see anything to the North (there's a park that our house backs onto, trees block the view) and the West is pretty obstructed as well, but apart from that it's completely clear. Only a few streetlights but they're pretty unreliable and constantly turn off for no reason, so usually it's pretty good.

Apart from that I go up with the family to a block of land in Cliffton (town in the middle of nowhere) faaaaar from any cities and with unobstructed views :).

I live in a suburb of Adelaide called Blackwood. It is located about 15 Kilometres from Adelaide in the foot hills. Skies are OK for Observing and most Astrophotography. I can see about 60% of the sky.

For local dark skies I go to either Mount Barker about 20 minutes further east or to Paris Creek which is about 40 minutes from my place and heading South East.

Then for really dark skies I drive 2 1/2 hours to my block on York Peninsula. Nice dark skies out there, just need to get the local council to place shrouds over the street lights and it would be perfect.

Usually my backyard..every attempt this year I have made to get to Linden Observatory in the Blue Mountains where the Western Sydney Amateur Astronomy Group observes a couple of Saturday nights a month has been met with stubborn and heavy cloud:(

I have two spots, backyard and a place about 20 min by car thats basically the side of a quiet road with good unobstructed horizons.

My backyard view suffers fairly bad light polution to the north and west but worse than that its next to impossible to get any dark adaptation due to numerous street lights that I can't shield myself from so I'm considering making a set of these.
