I came across this area on Wednesday night and had seven galaxies in the field of the Nagler 22! Many thanks to glenc for identifying it and for sending me the image below:

The site Deep Sky Browser shows the area well:

I was going to post a report on it but I was not fully dark adapted and was going to pay this great area another visit. Those with bigger mirrors and dark skies should not hesitate!

Hi Paul & All,

It is a wonderful region and one of the very best galaxy clusters for southern observers.

There is an article in the form of a galaxy-hop through the brighter Fornax cluster members in Nov/Dec 2006 AS&T, that some might find helpful/useful.

Best,

Les D

This is indeed one of my favourite areas of the sky. I was recently observing from Coonabarabran with my 20 inch scope, and it was sublime. Make sure you look at NGC 1097 around this area too. See if you can see 1097A - it was very apparent when I observed it.

Thanks for that. I'll have a look for the article, I don't know if I have that issue.

I will indeed keep a lookout for it:

As the image shows, it's tiny, but the surface brightness looks pretty good, Mag 12.9.
Once the storms and cloud buzz off, I will explore some more.

Post a report mate!

Only observed thiss region once. Made a sketch with the 10" dob using an 18mm Celestron Ultima EP, with 6 galaxies in the FOV.

Clear tonight, but lots of haze again, as has been the case all week....hopefully tomorrow night delivers the goods.

I reckon this is one of the best bits of sky. Not only for detailed obs of galaxies, but just for cruising around with a low power ep and just seeing how much is there. Just had a wonderful tour through it at VicSouth with Tim Nott's 22" dob using the spiral search on the AN and servo cat - just swimming across all of these galaxies. 'Twas fantastic!

Patrick!!!
You really know how to make a bloke jealous!!!
Seriously though, it is a great region and I have only started to explore it.
