My family (made up of baby boomers and Gen Y) saw 2012 last night. We all thought it was awful but agreed that the special effects were good and if that's enough to carry a moive for you then you would probably enjoy it. The story line is formula and cliché right to the very end.

So Claude, were the ancient Mayans right? Should we bother packing? :confused2:

FredSnerd

Yeah Chris, surprise, surprise the Mayan "prediction" was spot on. The only ones who kept having to revise their estimates were the best scientific minds of the 21st century; "Its happening much sooner then we expected Mr Prisedent". Close up on Mr President, looking very concerned and statesman like .

I saw the insert for 2012 in Brisbane's MX on Wednesday and it was horrid...so much misinformation...apparently, Sol is near the centre of the milky way...lol...

It sounds like it won't be too long before it's in the "2 for $10" bargain bin at the local DVD shop.

I don't mind watching these types of movies, always cheesy and good fun to pull apart.:lol:

Cheers

I'll go and see it, regardless of the reviews.

I'll approach it in the spirit of light entertainment, which it is, and suspend my disbelief for a couple of hours.

If I want genuine science/fact, I'll watch a BBC doco:)

Agree with Matt. Suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride.
Love me Apocolypse / Post Apocolypse films.
I wish somebody (talented) would make "A Colder War" into a flick.
That would be a great film!

Yep - another here. Couldn't give even ONE hoot in reference to it's believability or adherence to fact. Go for the ride and enjoy. I'll see it at a GoldPass cinema to get the full effect. :D

That's typical of a Roland Emmerlich movie. All his movies are like that...was there the obligatory cheesy line (or two) add in for good measure or supposed dramatic effect.

Plot or no plot, characters or no characters, a movie where the world blows up and america tries to save us all, gotta see it  just got to leave the brain at the door :)

Great! I hope it's just like his other movies. He's become the master of disaster/apocalype films...which I love:)

As for the cheesy line here or there?...I just have a laugh and keep rolling with the action. I'm honestly not there for the thoughtful, snappy dialogue!!!

Most of us haven't seen the film...yet

(And yes - I know - the US always saves the day in these films)

The frightening part is that there will be WAY too many who either believe that it is, or a conspiracy to hide the truth by deriding it.

Anyway, it will be good to be prepared for this end of the world, because I kept forgetting the last 4 or 5 and missed them entirely.

It's not funny, cos the average person who reads the MX is going to believe this BS...since we're in the International year of Astronomy, I believe we should be trying to teach the ordinary person the correct things about Astronomy etc...

A guy bailed me up in the pub.."what do you reckon about 2012" ...well I said dont get carried away it is a load of crap...yes he said but what about all the predictions etc...

OK I had to admit those acient folk must have known something and as those stupid predictions are not much better than some of the crap in the most published book why should they (BS predictions) not be as valid as stuff our national religion is happy to entertain... so although suggesting facts may have more clout than superstition one could not argue against the logic of nonsence... you can never argue against belief and belief is simply what folk want to believe not what is a reasonable reality.

Actually yes!!!
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/wiki/Entertainment_Weekly), Emmerich confirmed that a television series based upon the film is in the works. The series will serve as a sequel to the film and is planned to focus on a group of survivors in 2013.

SO. It's the end of the world as we know it (sort of) , but a group of wonderful Americans are able to survive until 2013!

Here's my title for the series… "2013 : The Survival" ?

What a true OxyMORON !! :P

By the time it comes out, it'll be 2012, and their will be no one to watch it!

The part i enjoyed most was picking it apart from a science point of view, some things they got right, some not so much and some where just completely of the mark...

Last time i read about the Yellowstone supervolcano, i remember reading that when it does go were all dead right there one way ot another and in this movie it was just a side plot :O

Anywho i challenge you all to come up with as many as possible, i have a few more :D

I am mostly concerned about whether I get my subscription to sky and space filled before the end of the world in 2012. Sorry couldn't resist, I'll groan with you all ;).

Actually it was probably one of the SIGNS!

Ian Robinson

Re Yellowstone :
when it pops it's lid , it'll take out a big chunk of the USA and Canada , globally no great loss, and will make things pretty horrible for the rest of the USA and Canada and Europe, but we are definitely not all done for when it goes off.

Thats the direct effect, i thought i read about the smoke and dust it would blow out would cover the planet lowering the temperture quite a bit, killing crops and possibly causing another ice age.
