<p>Hi all.</p>
<p>I'm pleased to announce the <strong><a href="/index.php?id=73,243,0,0,1,0">IceInSpace Xmas 2005 Competition</a></strong>, which will be launched at <strong>9am AEDST on Friday the 25th November 2005</strong>.</p>
<p>As a result of&nbsp;all the positive feedback received after the <a href="/index.php?id=73,227,0,0,1,0">IceInSpace 1st Anniversary Competition</a>, I've organised another competition for the valuable IceInSpace members &nbsp;to celebrate Christmas 2005.</p>
<p>The competition is open to IceInSpace Forum members, and almost $1000 worth of prizes are up for grabs, thanks to&nbsp;the generous sponsors:&nbsp; <a href="http://www.bintelshop.com.au/">Bintel</a>, <a href="http://www.skylab.com.au/">SKY:Lab Astronomy Software</a>, <a href="http://www.astroshed.com/">Eddie Trimarchi</a>, <a href="http://www.astmag.com.au/">Australian Sky &amp; Telescope</a>&nbsp;and <a href="http://www.myastroshop.com.au/">My Astro Shop</a>.</p>
<p>All you have to do to enter&nbsp;is be an <a href="/forum"><font color="#2c619b">IceInSpace Forum</font></a>&nbsp;member (<a href="/forum/register.php?"><font color="#2c619b">register here</font></a>) and answer 30 <strong>mutiple choice</strong> quiz style questions before <strong>5pm on the&nbsp;15th&nbsp;December 2005 AEDST</strong>. The good news is, <strong>you only need to get 1 answer correct</strong> to be in the draw to win the fantastic prizes on offer. To encourage research, the more answers you get right, the more entries you get in the draw and the&nbsp;greater your&nbsp;chances&nbsp;of winning.</p>
<p>The competition will be officially launched at <strong>9am on the 25th of&nbsp;November 2005 AEDST</strong>, at which time the quiz form&nbsp;will be posted and you can submit your answers online.</p>
<p><strong>For more information</strong>, including details of the prizes on offer and the important competition rules, can be found here on the <a href="/index.php?id=73,243,0,0,1,0"><font color="#2c619b">Competition Page</font></a>. Please be sure to read the rules carefully to ensure your entry is valid and eligible to win the great prizes! You can find discussions on the forum <a href="/forum/showthread.php?t=5280"><font color="#2c619b">in this thread</font></a>.</p>
<p>Thankyou to our supporters, and we welcome all new members to be part of our Xmas celebrations!</p>
Please use this thread to discuss all aspects of the competition.

Hi Mike

Thanks for making the effort of organising another competition for us. i love the sound of this format - I thought it was the best suggested type of format to use following the feedback from our anniversary competition. It gives everyone a chance to win, while those more diligent with their research will have a better chance to win.

Good onya Mike

Cheers, Dave W

I sent out a bulk email to all registered forum members announcing the competition. If you didn't receive the email, please check the email address in your profile and make sure it's correct as I get many bounced emails each time I send a bulk message like that out.

I so want to win first place! Just for the Nagler! :D
i guess i had better study on the :computer: and :prey: that i won't :bashcomp: but perhaps I'm more like :einstein: and know more answers then I think! :)

Cool, great idea. Excsue my noobieness, but what's a nagler eyepiece?? (I bet that's one of the questions :nerd:).

Anyway, how can you draw the winner out of the barrel, when the names are all in a hat ;)

ballaratdragons
09-11-2005, 10:40 PM
Russell, a Nagler is an Eyepiece worth about a Gazillion dollars and is said to be the best of the best. It is named after the owner of the TeleView company Al Nagler.

great comp Mike, and thanks to all sponsors.

A nagler with an Eddie T, wow!!!!!

janoskiss
09-11-2005, 11:59 PM
I wondered about that too Dave, the prize bundles. There are lots of prizes but they're going to go to just 3 winners. One prize per entrant might be more popular; with more winners..

I have one of those Naglers and it is not a bad little eyepiece. :D ... and it only cost a little more than my scope. :eyepop:

I see no reason why not, I say let all owners, admins, moderators, spamerators (ken & me), agitators (paul), confuserators(ving), orators(dave 47tuc), grumporators (asimov) & naglerators (houghy) should be able to enter.

What is the harm in giving Mike and Mojo one entry each??????

I know that they will be marking the questions, but fairs fair guys!

I will start a poll.

500 members, we need 5% to make a forum and a 2/3 majority in the affirmative so that Mike & Mojo get at least one entry!!

Mike/All

As you are drawing out the winners in the order 1st, 2nd then 3rd is it appropriate to stipulate if you have won one prize you cant win another.
Otherwise some lucky so and so who was lucky enough to get 20 questions right could win all three.:P:)

Just a thought
Chris

Another comp? Oh my! The last one was a lot of fun, and I actually learnt quite a bit just answering the quiz questions. I need something to get me back into observing mode, the weather out this way hasnt been very kind for what seems like months now. :(

Thanks to the sponsors and Ice for putting the comp on. What a great site! :D

iceman
23-11-2005, 03:20 PM
Chris,

Good point to raise.

You cannot win more than one prize, for people with multiple entries into the draw.

Another name will be drawn in the case of the same person being pulled out twice.

And btw, there are 30 questions :)

And thanks Simon! I hope you enjoy this one too.. the questions are easier! :)

33South
23-11-2005, 03:35 PM
Sorry I didnt mean to confuse I meant you only need 20 right to get three entries.

Chris

iceman
23-11-2005, 03:50 PM
ah yes, you're right.. but if you get all 30 right you get 4 entries! :)

iceman
24-11-2005, 06:19 AM
Just a heads-up: The quiz will be launched at 8am tomorrow (Friday), rather than 9am as originally stated, as I have a meeting to go to so won't be at my computer at 9am.
I'm guessing people would prefer it to be launched earlier rather than later :P

The IceInSpace Xmas 2005 Competition is launched!

Go to the Competition Info Page (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.php?id=73,243,0,0,1,0) and scroll down to the "Quiz Questions" section, and follow the link to the questions.

You can only submit your answers once, there's no changing them once you've pressed submit (and confirmed).

You have 2 weeks to get your entries in, and you have to be an IceInSpace forum member to take part.

Once your entry is submitted, when you go back to the questions page you'll be shown the answers that you submitted.

Enjoy, have fun and hopefully learn something!

Hi all,

iceman
27-11-2005, 07:58 AM
Hi twokids, yes, I will be posting the answers after the competition has closed.

I'm glad you enjoyed doing the quiz!

janoskiss
27-11-2005, 01:57 PM
Maybe this one is a bit too easy. A blind click on submit guarantees at least one entry, because there is no way that out of 30 questions none of them have choice A as the correct answer, but even getting two 'free' entries is not all that unlikely. So everyone go to the comp page and enter; even if you hate quizes and homework, just click submit and you're in with a chance. But I'll be doing my best to get all 30 answers right because the prizes are terrific.

xrekcor
27-11-2005, 03:52 PM
I reckon Mike should put in a clause, If 30 answers appear as they do on the page you
should be made to wear a Goose avatar... Ken help us out here with your
photoshop skills.

Although perhaps the page should be coded so none of the options appear selected
when loaded.

regards,CS

PS: I got my in, all the best to all, thanks Mike! for another great comp.

Do I get 5 entries into the draw for picking up an Error in the Quiz???
The correct answer to Question 21 is "Aristarchus of Samos" (as far as we know).
Of course the qualifier there is that at that stage the "solar system" was synonomous to "the universe".

slice of heaven
07-12-2005, 04:57 PM
I noticed that too Sarah, but I think the idea of the multiple choice is to reduce the number of correct answers to the ones available.

And :welcome:

welcome aboard sarah :)

and everyone should give up on this quiz, i have won it already! ;)

iceman
07-12-2005, 08:55 PM
Hi Sarah.

Thanks for picking that up :) But Slice is right, with the 1st birthday competition quiz, I had to accept multiple answers because people came up with answers I didn't (and they were also correct!).

This time, with multiple choice it means you have to pick one of the available answers and one of the answers is always the most correct :)

:welcome: to the forum, btw! Do you know Lesa Moore at Macquarie Uni?

Sarah
07-12-2005, 08:59 PM
Thanks for the welcome and yes I do know Lesa Moore - we started Uni together :) and 8 years later we're doing PhD's together :) albeit in different departments.
You'd know Lesa from star parties? and living up near her?

iceman
08-12-2005, 06:19 AM
Hi Sarah.

Yes, I met Lesa at the South Pacific Star Party in March this year, and was surprised to learn she lives just up the road from me! :) Lesa and her husband Peter are also coming to the IceInSpace AstroCamp at Lostock, at the end of January next year.

Maybe you can come up too?

Got your PM too, thanks.. will respond shortly.

Hehehehe. I think I got 10 right. Not bad considering I just ticked off what sounded right. I did the test in 1 minute. Did not bother to try to get all the answers right, after all you only need one entry to win. Only one entry can win. If you studied for this and only got 20 or less, then you have something to worry about. If you missed one or two questions for getting full marks, YOUR'RE TAKING THIS TOO SERIOUSLY. And; your being a swat. LOL

lol re syzygy - an interesting fact about Syzygy, it's the shortest word with 3 y's :P wikipedia knows everything :P

You may or may not be surprised that the Syzygy question was one of the questions that tripped most people up. The other tricky one was question 30.

What does that mean?

I think it's fair that people take it seriously and maximise their chances to win a $450 eyepiece and other prizes.

It's obvious that some people tried to answer it with their general knowledge, while others did the research and tried to get all of them right. Both are valid, and the whole idea of the quiz is for people to learn stuff they don't know. Hopefully people learnt stuff along the way!

I thought the questions in this one were a good mix of general knowledge, and some back-of-your-mind astronomy knowledge that most people would either know, or should know, or knew once but forgot :P

You could just press submit without touching any answers and get 6 right :P

No you are wrong... the one I got wrong cost ME the winning entry!:nerd: I don't know... dodgey internet searches... I was sure I had a reference that said one/some of saturn's rings were outside the Roche limit, and that they weren't all ice... It's hard to get good help!:)

Gotta say that's a fair comment Mike.

I think it was a good balance of stuff you might know or think you know, and stuff you needed to have a look around to answer.

I don't think there's any shame in doing some research and learning something in the process.

And doing the research didn't detract from the fun, it added to it.

I felt I was on something of a treasure hunt:lol:

Thanks to everyone involved and good luck in the draw!;)

I liked Q30, as I had to have a good think about that one, and even happier I got it right :)

That funny word Syzygy was one of the 17 I actually new without further assistance, how could one forget it, last time I heard it used was probably 25 years ago

The two that took most deliberation were 15 and 30.

janoskiss
15-12-2005, 08:54 PM
I spent the most time on that too of all 30. For starters, the word "prove" is just so strong, that the honest answer would be "nothing". But it proved something for Galileo or for some people at the time.

Galileo's observations are very convincing evidence that Venus revolves around the Sun. But still no proof. There could be little Venetians heretics turning lights on and off at just the right times and in just the right order to make it look like the Church has got it all wrong, when in reality Venus is just moving around on its celestial sphere centred on Earth. Not likely, but not impossible. But a simple theory it is not. The simplest model that explains the observation is the most useful, and usually the most convincing reflection of reality (and the model most likely to be mistaken for reality).

Yes I'm a :nerd: and proud of it.

Mike, first I looked at the answers, I honestly thought that while putting together the quiz, you must have run out of patience and couldn't be bother to come up with yet another plausible incorrect answer and just hit some keys at random.

Double Doh!... They're my 2 wrong answers. And to think that they, amongst others, are 2 that I researched. Must refine my investigative methods. Oh well, a 2 in about 300 chance of winning a Nagler beats lotto odds.

Cool, I got 20 out of 30 without study or research. I only had 2 hours till the comp shut so I tried to use my memory.

I got Syzygy right coz when 'IceInSpace member' Syzygy first joined I looked up what his username meant!

I'll check Harry's results tomorrow to see how he went. He got quite a few right, I know that much.

 you actually got 29.. you got q15 wrong.

Ok here's some stats from the results..

158 entries submitted in the quiz

- Lowest score: 11/30
- Highest score: 30/30, shared by 17 people. Congrats to 33South, Argonavis, chunkylad, cometcatcher, DavidH, gbeal, glenc, grl, Hitchhiker, jackenau, mattrob, Mick, netwolf, Robby, Robert_T, Smokey and Twokids for getting all 30 right and therefore getting the maximum 4 entries into the draw.
- Everyone gets at least 2 entries into the draw, as noone got below 10/30.
- Total number of entries in the draw: 464. I'm going to need a big hat!
- Question 27 was the "easiest", with 99% of the respondants getting it right.
- Question 23 was the "hardest", with only 53% of the respondants getting it right.

Here are a couple of graphs, showing the breakdown of the score's people got, and also a graph showing the percentage% of people that got each question right.

Thanks!

Did the same at Uni. 80 % average for my degree. I like blowing my own trumpet. I am good, just ask me, I'll tell ya!!!

In 1 1/4" I have 4 eyepieces.

Cheap 30mm Kellner.
Celestron 18mm Orthoscopic (my work horse).
LV 10mm.
Tele Vue 7.4mm Plossl that someone gave me years ago.

The newest one is the LV10 I bought when I was in Sydney in 1992. :D No wait that's not right, the Tele Vue would be newer I think.

You already have a very diverse eyepiece collection. The 13mm Nagler will be quite a change from all of your existing EPs. I think you will love it. It will probably make your eyepiece collection the strangest mix of EPs in the country. Congratulations on a well deserved win!

Please tell us what you think of the Nagler. And pls be brutally honest.
