Took the Dragonfly shots last Summer - technical difficulties - being up a ladder at 6' in the air and twisting and turning around in a tree trying to get a shot of this Dragonfly. Only the determined get the shot lol...

The 3rd shot is what's left of a spider after a Wasp has had some dinner...

Mean old wasp picking on that cute, cuddly spider like that. Ripping it's legs off then eating it. Mean old wasp.

It's a dog eat dog world (or should that be wasp eat spider?). Wasps are reknowned for hunting and killing spiders.

Mark IIn, Sigma 150mm f2.8 APO Macro lens. From memory, 1/200, f11, ISO 400. Probably -1/3 FEC. I'd have to go and look at the EXIF to be sure (not at home at the moment).

Dave,

Stunning images. How far away from these critters are you when you click the shutter.

For the wasp it was 1:1, so probably around 15cm or so with the 150mm macro. For the Dragonfly shot, further away, as it wasn't take at 1:1. I was on full stretch, 6' up a tree, on a not so very stable ladder, dodgy branches and leaves. Add to the fact that the day was breezy, it was lucky I got that shot.

With eyes that big wouldnt you reckon that dragonflys would be able to see car windscreens ?????

Fantastic shots

Ta Jeff. Dragonflies have very sensitive eyes, but not like you or me would expect. They don't notice details so much, as more movement. And most insects that fly have a 2nd set of eyes called Oceli that they use to help navigate with (making sure that they are flying the right way up, etc).
