My very first sunspot. Taken with an Orion 80mm with my Canon 350D at 1/125 attached and handheld no tripod used at all.
I am very happy:D:D.

Woo Hoo, nice one.
You crazy man!! Hand held the ED80.
Makes it all the more special I reckon.
You're focus is out a little bit, you should be able to pick up more granulation on the photosphere.
But HAND HELD!!!

Thanks but I was more interested in keeping the scope still. I didnt even expect to capture a sunspot. It was more of a "suck and see" experiment to see what would happen.

I would say the experiment was a resounding success.

Excellent Adrian, bloody hell my 350D shots never come out like that!

Youve captured -
The dark umbral region of the spot
the lighter penumbral area around that
AND a very obvious plage or white area surrounding the whole active region.

Keep it up and alwys post your solar images as (unlike a lot of other things us amateurs image) the Sun can change from hour to hour. So you may have captured something no one else has.

Well done again and welcome to the Sun!

Dave Gradwell

Oh yeah just watch your orienation. goto somewhere like spaceweather.com and have a look at where the spot is on the disc.

What a top effort this is Adrian,

I really like your image in its own right, but to have achieved it with the scope & camera hand held is a great effort indeed.

Well done

Thanks for the comments. I will try a little harder for the next pictures. I tried again this morning and got a glimpse of a sunspot right on the edge of the sun (my left so it would be on the right of the sun). This time I paid a little more on focus but I dont have enough travel in with the extension tube attached and if I take it out I dont have enough travel out to achieve focus. The extension tube I have is 50mm long so I guess I would need a 35mm long extension to get focus.
Ahwell I might just have to spend some more on gear :camera:
