I'm sending my GSO RC back to GSO in Taiwan so they can fix it.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to send it?

The Australian delaer from whom the scope was bought has simply ignored my request for help and the importer has chosen to stop responding to my emails. So I seem to be on my own. It's Taiwan or nothing. That's OK. It helps me with future decisions about where to buy stuff - or not.

Do you still have the original box and packing?
My first stop would be good old Aust post.

It would be great if you could post some pictures of what is behind the mirror before you send it back.
For example, do the push / pull screws on the back move the mirror or just the focuser or the whole lot?
I hope you get it back all fixed up very quickly.

Thanks guys but I'm over the angst. I just want my scope fixed and since it's aparrent this isn't going to happen here, I am reconciled to sending it to Taiwan. The cost of that, with servicing and return freight adds up to about 50% of the cost of the scope. But the cost of not doing it is 100% because a dud scope is ... well, just that! And life is too short for litigation. I once had some advice from a lovely old lawyer who said "Son, every man has the right to go to court once in his life; but only a fool goes twice." I tend to agree.

He may not want to say ATM as vendor verdicts can be touchy subjects...but this search may help (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/search.php?searchid=1221050).

It currently appears that the vendor & import agents are unwilling to help!

Peter...have you contacted GSO directly bypassing the agents?

I got an on line quote from http://www.interparcel.com.au/quote/ for $150 with UPS and $140 with DHL. I guessed the weight and measurements and used here as a pickup address. Looks like it won't be cheap for a round trip.

Peter, How do you feel about waiting until after next new moon? I had a thought the other day that may be helpful.. Tell me, do you remember if the push/pull screws on the rear cell move the primary, primary baffle and the focuser? Or does it just move the focuser and the baffle? If its just the focuser and the baffle, (or even more annoying - just the focuser) then there is something I didn't try last time...

Considering its going back for re-alignment anyway, it couldn't hurt to pull the secondary out and use a collimated laser to make sure the focuser points directly up through the centre of the spider.... At least then, you know that the focuser (and likely the primary and baffle tube) are all relatively well aligned to the optical axis, then it would be a simple matter of adjusting the secondary..

I've been thinking about the way the oval shape of the defocused star seemed to swap over between horizontal and vertical oval when you were inside/outside of focus. If I remember correctly back to my SCT days, that would have to be a collimation issue, and most likely, a rear cell collimation problem... I'll look that up to be sure however...

Mate, the quotes I have for TNT to Taiwan are A$378 each way so, yes, I'm happy to wait a bit.

You should really talk to Fair Trading, that kind of thing just can't happen. If they still refuse, get it fixed locally and then send the bill to the dealer. (Find out if you can do that first). It will more than likely be cheaper than freight depending on the problem. I always find telephone calls re-enforce the action logging the date and time of the call. It always appears on the telephone bill.

Probably needs to be optically assessed by someone with interferometer, large front surface mirrors etc... aka back at the factory.

GSO should ask for it back but replace it at the same time.
