BTW, I should confess that I will be without the Mary Rose that night. Peter Read is doing some further mods for me....will tell you ALL about it on the 14th. I am most excited to be getting an 80mm Stellarvue finderscope fitted, etc etc.

So....I expect someone else with an SDM or Obsession to be there...please!!

Rick Petrie
30-10-2009, 06:06 PM
Rod....if there is no SDM's or Obsessions there, you can have a peek through mine. But I wouldn't want to spoil you too much while Mary is on leave.:P

i don't know how many times i have told you blokes about missing new moon nights

in december you go to your local newsagent and you buy a packet of stick on stars

IN JANUARY WHEN YOU GET YOUR NEW CALENDER FOR THE OFFICE AND KITCHEN - YOU PUT ONE OF THOSE STARS ON THE SATURDAY SQUARE CLOSEST TO THE NEW MOON EVERY MONTH FOR THE WHOLE YEAR

YOU TELL YOUR BETTER HALF WHAT THAT STAR MEANS

it is simple - you only need to do it once

never miss a new moon again :mad2:

Yes, young Geoff, BUT SWMBO will often come up with some "unexpected" yet necessary attendance, even with the new moon symbol on said calendar.

We have a yearly planner, and I mark EVERY new moon for the whole year before the end of the previous year. Well....you can bet at least 3 or 4 of them will involve the in-laws, or some engagement party (fancy anyone planning a party to clash with my observing night!!!).

Sorry to hear of your misadventure Geoff.
It won't be the same at the Pony Club without you :(
Was this accident anything to do with leaping - over the moon (re General Chat) ?

Snapped tendons in elbow! That sounds serious. Better order a good supply of straws ;) :drink:

gates will be open a bit after 6pm i spose (unless someone else gets there earlier)
not much point in getting there any earlier

just might be a bit of cloud early - don't let that put you off

sorry you will miss RB's birthday party Geoffro
(you know you don't have to bring a scope to get in the gate - and we will hand feed you sausage rolls and pies if needs be - i mean you can't really go out anywhere with your arm in a sling - accept the pony club of course)(it's in the rules that we have to accept people with their arms in slings)

Sorry to hear about your mishap Geoffro, hope you make a speedy recovery mate !

I'm going to try and make it tonight since it's the first break I've had for so long.
This hot weather has thrown a bit of a spanner in my plans, since I have to make sure all is well before I leave here but I should be there later tonight.

I won't be able to make next week though.

Anyway hope to catch up with everyone tonight hopefully.

Well looks like I am the first to log a report.

There was some cloud to contend with during the course of the evening, becoming somewhat blanket-like after midnight, but some nice views were enjoyed early on.

I particularly enjoyed:

+chatting with Allan and in particular getting to look at the M42 region of the sky through his SV 80mm finder (am getting one myself...can't wait!)
+solving the world's problems with Phil
+discussing pertinent astronomical issues and conundra with John Bambury
+listening to an in-depth dissertation on cigars by RB
+eating cake provided by The Owl and RB - thanks guys
+taking in some photons on Phil's, Norm's, Greg's, Allan's, Rick's, Geoff's and Joe's scopes
+peering at the Milky Way between chuckles.

Didn't really get a chance to catch up with Deano....maybe next time!

What a great thing we do each month. Love it!

Ditto and Double Ditto

Pleasnt way to spend an evening

However, with two full rows of DOBs and Myself the lone SCT (in my own personal row), I was feeling a little outnumbered. Hurry back Geoffro!

Thanks all for a great night!
Next week same time same channel?
(maybe next week I'll bring a DOB too :eyepop:)

Yes - well - what looked like a very promising nite was spoilt by the cloud and dew - which wasn't supposed to be there.

good till about 11pm - then started to cloud out
Jupiter was looking very promising, and i was waiting for Orion to shine later on - but not to be - oh well - there is always next week
a reasonable sucker hole was opening up around 3am, but we had allready made the decision to close up.

Think we had 11 of the diehards on the roll call in all, and was good to see the people from across the road, who graciously turn their lights off for us when we visit, come over for a look through the scopes.

we gave RB a proper "birthday cake and beer" celebration, which he obviously didn't know he was going to get, cause he brought his own cake
very nice it was too

another good nite out with the crew - even if the clouds didn't want to play fair

Good to see everyone, skies let us down a bit but didn't really matter, like that new scope rick it's a little ripper.Thankyou to John .B. for checking out my scope, there is a wealth of info in that brain of yours John. I also have a new appretiation of cigars thanks to RB. I think thats the first time your weather forecasting has been wrong Mr owl ;) or maybe second time.
Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable evening

A very enjoyable night I thought despite the persistent clouds and dew. Some good viewing though earlier in the night.
Great as always to catch up with everyone and meet a few of the locals from the light source across the road. I think they now have an understanding of what we do and an appreciation of the dark sky we seek.
Nice also to meet Deeno's friends, Dave and Belinda, and demonstrate some of the jewels up there. Maybe future recruits?
Thanks Geoff for the loan of the battery and for all the goodies.
Hope you enjoyed the birthday cake RB.
Does anyone know if Deeno woke up before sunup???????? or is he still there?
Looking forward to next one.
Cheers Rick.

It was great to catch up with everyone.
Good to have a break, take some time out from work and enjoy an evening with good friends.

I want to thank Geoff the owl for surprising me with a lovely birthday cake complete with candles.
You're a legend mate !
And I was touched by everyones birthday wishes, thanks everyone, you guys are terrific.

The views we had were lovely even though the evening was cut short due to the weather change.
And of course since the weather deteriorated, I enjoyed passing on some of my knowledge about Cuban Cigars to anyone game enough to lend me their ear.

Once again a big thank you to all for making the evening such a great time for me, I hope you guys get better weather next week.
