View Full Version here: : PLEASE READ - Sick kids want a scope

Dear fellow Icers, :help:
Bear Cottage is a special children’s hospice based in Manly Sydney. This is a place where many very sick children go to spend quality time with their families. Sadly, this is the last place many children get to experience. Many do indeed go there to pass away and in the best surroundings possible.
Getting out there once a month with a scope and providing tours of the sky is covered already. However, with your support, I would like to provide them with a quality refractor on a simple Alt Az mount. To have a scope available to them permanently and not have to wait for the monthly visit provides an obvious benefit.
Apart from most of these kids and their families never having had the opportunity to look through a telescope - simply getting them to ponder about the size and unknowns of the universe can be extremely helpful.
Bear Cottage is arranging a special donations account exclusively for this cause. Update They asked us to use the following for donations http://www.everydayhero.com.au/scope_soldiers_telescopes_for_kids $1000 is still our goal!
http://www.bearcottage.chw.edu.au/
Will also be seeking a consensus as to the most appropriate equipment too? Collimation is not an option for example.
Best Wishes,
Astro78

Astro, You have my full support. I will be donating as soon as you put up the details, mate
It is not about the astronomy, as you well know. It is about the respite and quality of life that these young 'uns get enjoy at this time in their life.
Geez, if we cannot raise at least $1000 you are proposing there is something wrong.

I have a WO Megrez 80SD in a soft case which I'm more than willing to donate to this wonderful cause if this helps. It's in very good condition and would mean that the rest of the cash could go into a good mount and a variation of decent eyepieces along with a few books and maps. It has the original L-bracket.
The offer's there anyway... :)
Otherwise, I'm in for a donation!

I have a GOTO Nexstar Celestron Az mount with the Hand controller that I don't use at all. If Chris' refractor fits on it then they have a full system with basic tracking. It's a simple dovetail attachement. I have the dovetail too somewhere. Let me know.

I've found an Orion 1.25" Dielectric diagonal that I don't use. That's now accompanying the scope, so we're OK for that folks.
We do, however, need still a WO red dot finder with the WO stand-off post. Anyone have one?

I'd like to donate $ too, when you have the account details please let me know. There are few things that compare to the thrill of seeing for the first time Saturn or Jupiter, even the moon through a telescope no matter what age you are. I'd love to get feedback on how it all goes too.

Awesome.
Do we need a finder scope??
Omaroo
28-10-2009, 06:42 PM
Yep David, we do! :)
The scope is a William Optics, and is designed to accommodate the William Optics red dot finder which attaches to a specially-made single-bolt stand-off post. I don't have one otherwise it'd be in the case too. If anyone has one it'd be fabulous! I'm not sure of the best way to fit a standard finder if it comes to that as the dovetail that they typically use interferes and binds with the rotating focuser mechanism on the Megrez. It's always possible to shoe-horn a 6x30 or 7x50 on somehow.

What an awesome effort guys. As I have been in the hobby a relatively short time and don't have surplus gear, I would like to contribute some $$$. So please post details as soon as they are available.
Also is there a similar facility in Melbourne, perhaps some of we Victorian IIS members can do something similar?

I found a nice light weight 7x30 binos in box for the kids too.
I will make a donation. Post details.
If you end up with enough telescope gear, money could go towards binoculars (doesn't hurt to have more than one pair) or perhaps some books such as Atlas of the Southern Sky and a planisphere.
Let me know.

Oh. And This might be a good idea.
How about part of the donation money. Say 2-300 dollars go to about 12 Galileo scopes for the kiddies to actually build and learn??
What do you think?

The material contributions which have occured is breathtaking, and I'm sure in good time, when Astro post the banking details, others can make a financial contribution also.
Look, if we can buy up Compendiums at $60 a pop for our own pure indulgement (how many did we sell? 100-plus), then surely we could raise a decent amount to contribute towards the items being donated to this cause, couldn't we?

Along with the eyepiece will be a Meade MYSky about 8 months old. May I suggest you talk to Gy Wen Ho (Therapist) and you show her how to use it and how to store it. It works well (bought from my mates at Bintel) latest updates etc. Should be a fun techno aid for the kids.

Hey, I just had a thought,
Astro, now that we have almost a complete scope, and many other bits etc, perhaps if you are talking to Bintel or Andrews, you could possibly ask for a donation of an aluminium eyepiece case (value $49) to fit all these burgeoning eyepieces in for the kiddies?
Of course, if they want to chuck in more than this, (like an Astronomy 2010 mag, starwheel, compass,) well, that would be great too.
Cheers
Chris

Just some rambling thoughts to chew over?
I reckon those Philips Planispheres awould be suitable, they're made of plastic and will last forever ( I know York optical used to sell them)
Also a selection of beginners books for a small "star library" at the cottage? Nothing too complicated, but a good variety for all the children to share and learn from (including some IIS 2009 Compendiums).
What about Telrads? Would they be of any use on each scope? Easier for kids to use?

I don’t want to put a spanner in the works but has anyone put together one of these Galileoscopes and are they something that young kids can do without getting frustrated. In particular are the kids gonna get reasonable views from them. I think I read someone saying recently on IIS that they couldn’t get a reasonable view of Jupiter on the scope. If that’s so maybe we need to do a rethink.

Greg I hear you and do not disagree. Scope Soldiers is off the ground now and will be around to get around, Australia wide - so to speak. Please consider this stop one :D
As a side note team, please be aware, families do travel huge distances to spend time at Bear Cottage. So we're certainly servicing alot more than Sydney, right now at least.

I've built two, not with young children, but it can be done with adult supervision, from what I have read. Then it can be pulled apart and built up again.
If pulling one down, I would suggest leaving the eyepieces together. They are the only difficult part - getting the order of lenses right and avoiding major fingerprints!
Just need to make sure that they are supplied with the full detailed instructions off the website. Those that come in the boxes are a little too brief.
They are best on the Moon and getting close to some star clusters. With Jupiter, all you really get is the disc and the moons. But it can be hard to get Jupiter into the field of view. OK for terrestrial, if the observer can cope with inverted image!
En1gma
30-10-2009, 11:28 PM
I have also built one of these galileoscopes and I must say, they are relatively easy to build.
I had my 2 1/2 year old help me out. With the exception of the EP/Barlow. He basically built it himself with my direction. Just had to bring in the wipes to clean the main lens
And, watching a 2 year old absolutely happy with it and the expressions of awe just from viewing the moon, I was gobsmacked.
I would suggest only purchasing a minimal amount (12ish) for the learning curve of how viewing devices work in the field of astronomy. With the amount of children at the bear cottage, It would also enable alot of the children to have a fair go at viewing the night sky.
That is just my opinion.

Wow this is a top little kitty - that will just keep on giving for years to come!
We also have $1050
We'll also need a case for the eyepieces, books, charts, 12v power supply, celestron power tank, laminated instructions/Sky intro targets, Galileo scopes and...........??????:help:
Any money left over will be most wisely spend by Bear Cottage for their day to day running costs.
Poll coming soon :hi:

How about a roster of local IIS folks to go there and demonstrate the use of gear and provide guided observing - subject of course to all the requirements of the organisation.

Well this satisfies me and you and Eric would know. I'm just new to the hobbie mysel. Might need to get one of the galileoscopes for myself. See what the innerds of those things look like.

I already have this covered Eric but the more support the better for all. There's always someone with a bigger scope/more knowledge... I do get sick, have uni exams and of course am not always in town.

I haven't checked with Gy (Bear Cottage) today but Chris, Marc and Rob have dropped gear 'round to me here. So here at least is the goto mount, 70mm binos, one Galileo scope, red dot finder, small tripod, filters, 3xbarlow and 10mm WA ep, oh and a bino adapter. All virtually in brand new condition!
Has been great meeting you guys btw!
I'll touch base with Gy tomorrow arvo/Wednesday at the latest to confirm he’s got the gold :D The gear here I'll try to take up this Friday.
We also have 15 Galileo's on hold thanks to Rob (Enigma) and the guys at Sydney Uni physics department.

Hi Peter, just spoke to Gy a min. ago, it sure did  They're going to Luurve that!

Hi Trav,
Sorry about been late I was just so busy last week running my buisiness, that I only got a chance today to get to the post office to send down the gear to Gy. My days last week always finished after the post office had shut.
Make sure you let me know if it does not arrive.
My family hope the kids get some nice clear skies to use it .
Thanks again for organising something like this, and top work from all the IIS members who have contributed to this.

Hi Guys,
I have to share the experience of one particular young fella last week at Bear Cottage. I cannot recall his name but the sheer level of excitement had to be seen to be believed :eyepop: talk about cool!
This amazing fellow cannot speak due to his cerebral palsy condition, at first I wasn't sure if he could see Jupiter ('twas patchy cloudy and also not easy for him to lean over from his wheelchair) but clearly he got a good view - I've seldom seen such a physical expression of sheer excitement and happiness :D Was amazing to see this let me tell you.
Gy at Bear Cottage has asked for a list of items for them to go ahead and purchase with the $1100 we have all raised. They have the money directly from Everydayhero and I'll help negotiate best prices and praise if required for the willing Astronomy shop. After essential purchases (including Galileo scopes) they hope to have half left over for other essential 'non astro' gear.
I roughly propose the following, but guys, please all who contributed, suggest and guide(?):
15 Galileo scopes ($375)
1 power pack for goto mount (est. $150)
1 aluminium case ($50)
Several durable planospheres (est. $60)
Plenty of batteries for meade mysky (est. $30)
Larger tripod for the 70mm binos (est. $100)
ps: apologies for any delays on expected updates. Have been hit for 6 in every direction these past weeks. Will be off-line around mid-Dec too.

Hi Travis, looks good. One suggestion though, rechargable batteries would be best for the mysky. Not sure if you had that in mind .

Top idea Mark, I didn't think of that. It probably chews through batteries like nothing else and provides a more permanent solution. It's very possible it may not get used if batteries cannot be afforded.
Looks like we need 4AA's - PeterM is that right?
DSE have a Varta charger +4 AA's for $50 - any experience with these anyone?

Is that the "Charge & Go"? I have one and the 15 min charge time it claims is about right. Might be a good idea to get a second set of Varta batteries.

Hi Trav,
Did my 3 Meade/Orion eyepieces my 6 year old daughter wanted to donate to the cause arrive in good condition?
She owned them with her ETX scope and after explaining to her what it is all about she wanted to give them.
She keeps asking me if the kids are liking them?
Post some feed back so I can show her they are been used.

Hi Matt,
Mate I'm 90% sure I saw them but will call Gy in the morning to be sure. So sorry for missing your last post :confused2:. Just saw the date and feel slack to both you and your daughter. I saw a heap of gear for 3mins last week then had to quickly get my scope sorted as we had a minor hitch with their new megrez mount not being compatible with their goto. Omoroo (Chris) is getting the dovetail machined/drilled to fit. We'll have their scope 'n mount up and running asap.
I believe Gy is keen to send your daughter (and all) a letter of gratitude (shhh ;)). He also took some photos on my last visit and I'm sure will take plenty of great shots of the gear in action down the road.
I completely dropped the ball on this - will get asap

Hi Trav,
This is all great news, wonderful.
The MySky does require 4 AA batteries and yes rechargeable are the ones to use. The 2500mha will easily last for a full night, so 2 sets and a quick charger may cost around $70. You could try contact Eveready (or maybe someone here knows someone there) in Sydney to see if they can donate a charger and batteries. I had an issue with a charger a year ago and they had no hesitation in sending a replacement, no receipts, questions or returns asked for.
Anyways ya all dun good.

No need to feel slack about it at all mate, you have done more than any of us by spending time with the kids.
All we have done is send you down some items to help. These are just materialistic but what you do is way more for them .
My young daughter is just as keen in astronomy as I am so last year I gave her my old ETX scope and 7 eyepieces and we are keen for her to understand things in life by helping other people.
She was thrilled to know 3 of her eyepieces were going to some special kids, and as a kid she was asking me about the eyepieces and if they had seen the moon and Jupiter which are her favourites. So I thought I would just ask. Keep up the good work.
Matt.

Hi Chris and team,
Sorry about my lagging delay. I touched base last week and there hasn't been a whole lot of astro action, yet.
Seems the goto mount has the staff scared. Although the manual is there, i'm now looking to tee up a time to run through the operation side. Shall be a learning curve for me too, but imagine the celestron nextstar unit should be quite learnable.
Glad you touched base for the prompt mate

The kids at Bear Cottage are in for a super treat mid-June!!
Mental4astro (Alex) will be taking his new monster 17.5" scope out for the next boys camp. Supported by Hickny (Peter) the evening should be a new and memorably experience for the boys.
It will be unlikely Alex and Peter will be allowed to provide us with photos but I'm sure we will get a great account of the evening.
Two great fellas +our donations +super scope +excited deserving kids = awesome

A date has been organised for the next astro viewing at Bear Cottage, 17'th of June. Bit of 'will it happen, won't it happen' after the flooding the Cottage experienced a couple of weeks ago due to the amount of rain that fell.
I'll be taking two, maybe three scopes. Odessius, my 17.5", will most likely be just for exhibition- just too big for most kids there. I'll be also taking my C5, to which I'll also attach the webcam I knocked up using the 'Projects and Articles' webcam project,. I may also take my 8" reflector. It will also serve as a comparison between the more traditional solid tube appearance to the more contemporary open truss scopes.
Hickny may come and help out hopefully.
We'll see how it goes in a couple of weeks time.
Mental.

Hi all,
last night I took a couple of scopes to Bear Cottage to give the kids, their families and the staff there, a squiz at the night sky. Hickny couldn't make it unfortunately.
I arrived and was greeted by one of the nurses and one of the boy's. The eagerness of this 11yr old fellow was humbling.
I was invited to dinner, and the family like atmosphere espoused by everyone there took me aback- I felt like I had stumbled upon someone's family dinner. Only too quickly was I made to feel oh so very welcome.
I took two scopes, my little Celestron C5, and the big 17.5" fella. All the boys, it was a "boys' camp night" this one, crowed around to see the gear being set up. Questions coming thick and fast from dinner, and didn't stop for the three hours I was there.
I had been made aware that the boys on the night would be in wheel chairs, so brought along the webcam I made following the instructions given in the 'Projects and Articles'. Best thing ever! Only one of the boy's would have been able to look through and eyepiece, so this little charmer of a camera, and a laptop, filled the entire session.
The entire viewing time at the scope was spent with the Moon and Saturn. The ooo's and aaahh's and wow's were amazing to hear.
But, here is the kicker- The boys ages were from 11 to around 13, and they were so well versed and educated in things astro, I could have been speaking to adults with years of experience in this. Their ability to grasp sometimes abstract concepts left no doubt at their eagerness to learn.
A couple of times I was rattled to be able to answer some of their insightful questions. They were aware of the return of the Japanese space probe Hayabusa, the Lunar Global Surveyor, the fireball observations on Jupiter, the recent canning of the USA's manned lunar missions, I'm out of breath, pant, pant, pant...
We were so very lucky with the weather and the objects available to us. The morning was aweful, with wind, clouds and rain. This all disappeared for the viewing to reveal such a brilliant sky. As mentioned, the Moon and Saturn were the main telescopic fair, with a brief laser guided showing of the Southern Cross and the False Cross, and how to distinguish them with the Pointers, Alpha Centuri, and you could hear the jaws hit the ground when Scorpio was revealed!!!
In the end, I never got to set up the 'big fella'. I was swamped straight away from setting up the C5 that the chance never really presented itself. A bit disappointing, but really, it was not missed. My little C5 was a real little trooper.
I need to thank Astro78 for making us aware of Bear Cottage here on IIS. Thanks for being the first point of contact with Bear Cottage,.
Thank you to Mr Gy Wen Ho, the Child Life Therapist at Bear Cottage, for making this viewing session possible. Thank you for your hospitality and genrosity of spirit.
Thankyou to the staff of Bear Cottage for your welcome and enthusiasm with the kids.
An enourmous thank you to the boys who came along that night. I was so impressed with your excitment, eagerness, questions, energy and cheek, that I'm still floating on air.
A silent and unaware hero in all of this is David Childs. The article he wrote on making a webcam into an AstroCam made this night the sucess it was. No way would these labs been able to appreciate the night sky if you had not written your article:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/63-431-0-0-1-0.html
The kind regards of the members of IIS were passed on and happily received. Mention of the donated gear was made, but fleetingly as there was so much happening. It has been greatly appriecated. Only needs some help in making the most of it, ok boys and girls of IIS!
Gy will send me a couple of pictures taken on the night, of which the families of the boys have ever so kindly allowed to be published. As soon as I receive them I'll post them here.
This experience will live with me for a long, long time.
WOW! really is the only way I can describe it!
Alex.

To the soldiers that helped I thank you but of course my thanks should mean little.
I wish I had the ability and strength to continue but I could not. It affected me far more than I ever thought. To those such as Alex that towed the line in my weakness of not being here - thank you :thanx:
These kids tought me several things the most significant being guts. Guts you cannot learn on any battlefield which regrettfully i have seen.
Without any challenge you guys pulling for this cause helped me start many better charities or at least causes. Better only in that those who have passed at Bear cottage will not have done so without making this world a better place.
let us never let ourselves down by failing to help others.
Life is a trip - so trip hard.

Nearly lost my son several times when he was young, your post reminds me of how close we were.
