Lunar View

Hi:P
I have a copy of Exploring the Moon and Virtual Moon and have been trying to get used to the software while there are so many clouds outside.
I understood the book refers to moon views as seen in Australia...
is it possible to do something to the software so that it views the way it is seen here... :confuse2:
Hope that makes sense...
I have tried going into "information' on the menu, and playing with the north/south orientation and mirrow...
can suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Janine :hi: If it's Virtual Moon Atlas, have you set your co-ords? Long & Lat, time zone? (in Configuration) Might help. :shrug:

Hi Janine, :)

to get the correct Southern Hemisphere naked eye view in Virtual Moon Atlas go to the Configuration menu. Select the 'General' tab. Enter your latitude and longtitude and time zone.

Then go to the Tools tab - select default orientation 'South'. Uncheck 'Mirror'. This should give you the correct naked eye orientation and you should find it agrees with the orientation of the moon maps in Steve Massey's Exploring the Moon.

Try this and see if it looks correct.

i think it was configured alright...but i clicked off mirror...

checked the moon outside and looking up from where i am (Brisbane) the crescent is at the bottom - not the side...hope that makes sense...

Hi Janine,

in the Virtual Moon Atlas display the moon is always shown upright (like the moon phase applet in these forums) - they both show an 'ideal' moon as if it was directly north of the observer. Looking at the real crescent moon in the sky it will be on its side compared to the VMA view. In VMA the visible crescent is a lighter shading - you have to make a slight mental adjustment when you go from the display to the real moon.
