:P Do you believe in the end of the world or should I say the end of man kind in December 2012, my self I think not it will be just another day and it makes me think what were they smoking, the Mayan Indians were smoking cocaine but the rest that had predicted the end of man kind in December 2012 what were they smoking (I want some)

Ian Robinson

Long answer : ..... No.

The world will not end .

Baron von Richthofen
25-10-2009, 07:12 PM
But what were they smoking is the big question?

That's what all pot heads think when they wake up in the morning... :P

marki

From memory it wasn't so much what they were smoking but rather what they were chewing. A small catus plant containing LSD or something similar if I remember correctly. They also had a sour beer.

I have herd that several cultures predicted the end of the world in December 2012, who ware they, does any body here know who they were?

hilb
25-10-2009, 08:26 PM
That's when the Mayan calendar runs out. Mind you they wrote it about 5000 years ago. It's not like they actually predicted the end of the world, more that they just got tired of writing...!

Vars,

The other day I was reading an article in Wikipedia that said that in 1704 Isaac Newton predicted the world would end no earlier than 2060. And he said that he made this prediction not because he had any idea of when it would end but so he could get some respite from the constant predictions that the world would soon end. So you see. Nothing’s changed. I suppose though that mathematically one day someone is going to be right

FredSnerd

Can you imagine. Its late at night and this poor Mayan scribe is really really tired and he says " I think I'll just finish it tomorrow"

Its not the same stuff we smoke now. It was seriously hallucinogenic. Tobacco wasn't introduced into Europe for the aristocracy. Originally it was introduced to keep the masses calm.

I get a lot of people come to the visitors centre and say to me, "I heard blah blah.." When I ask them where they "Heard" this, they don't know.

So, I heard.:P..people tell me they heard a lot of cultures predicted the end at 2012. I'm actually pretty sure that's just the slogan/synopsis for this movie to get public controversy, conversation to make the movie more of a curiosity.

Does anyone here have any shameless cut and pastes from ancient cultural texts that actually put the end of the world at this same time?

I for one, have never heard of ANY other cultural myths/predictions/legends besides the Mayan one that corroborates it.

Anyone?

Baz.:D

I have found three sources that claim that the end of the world will happen in December 2012 and it all depends on interpretation of what was written
1 Mayan Indians
2 Nostradamus (http://au.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGk3OG_eRKrW0AdfsL5gt.;_ylu= X3oDMTEzNmMxOWJvBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQR jb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0FVQzAwMV8x/SIG=11stdfmoj/EXP=1256607494/**http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostradamus)
3 the original old bible

renormalised
26-10-2009, 01:09 PM
Scrub the first one...in actual fact, the Mayans never mentioned anything about the end of the world in 2012. All they can be said to have stated is that their long count calendar, for the present world cycle, comes to a close in 2012. In any case, most of the records regarding this, and most other things associated with them, were destroyed by the Spaniards when they conquered Mexico and Sth America (no thanks to the Catholic Church, which spearheaded the destruction, except for a few enlightened priests). Much of the interpretation of death and devastation is due to sensationalists writings of a few "alternative world view" historians and "archaeologists" back in the 50's and 60's. Them and the prevailing Judeo-Christian and Muslim mindset of Western and Middle Eastern culture.

Ian Robinson
26-10-2009, 01:32 PM
Renormalised dealt with 1.

wrt Nostradamus, the man wrote in riddles and like all fortune tellers was a bull poo artist. So scrub his "predictions" , they are all poppycock.

wrt the bible , it's a fairytail cover to cover written and then rewritten and changed over the last few thousand years , knicking myths and legends from the Babylonians and other more ancient civilisations. So scrub any predictions that some people think are in the bible about the end of the world.

btw , anyone who has any curiousity can check on the long line of end of the world predictions by this and that bible based cult over the last 18 hundred years and see there have been a long line of end world predictions , all of which came and went , and nothing came of them .

And there is no invisible brown dwarf or monster comet heading our way either so don't go there either.

Sheesh, this is bad. My calendar on my desk only goes up to December 2009. Will the end come earlier for me? ;P

If there is one thing human beings are renowned for its soaking up predictions of doom. Even now in the 21st century our religous beliefs are still fundamentally entwined in screwballs from thousands of years ago. Its a pity that the media thrives on delivering populist and paranoid propaganda rather than investigative journalism that identifies fact from fiction.

1 - Mayan Indians - their calendar ends - thats ALL it says.
2 - Nostradamus - give me one proven prediction that doesn't have 50 different meanings and interpretations. Or rather just give me one proven prediction..
3 - Dont recall seeing 2012 in the original old bible anywhere..

Take a look at this website

http://www.whathappensin2012.com/2009/06/bible-predicts-firey-holocaust-in-2012/

its an absoulte classic at trying to associate bible statements with 2012, yet offers no real link and then goes on to say how the "bible code" proves the theory. So someone has taken the english translation of a bible that has already been transalted probably a few times before and linked some words together and come up with this garbage.

That my friends is the true doom we face - so much rubbish being fed into the minds of people willing to believe such things..

There are many myths about the Mayans - and they are just that - myths.

This is what I don't understand - why to the rights of a particular religion, override the rights of someone else to speak their mind? What happens if part of my religious belief is being able to speak my mind freely, without fear of prosecution? Is that other particular religion then imposing on my religion? Methinks proponents of a particular religion need to grow thicker skins and be more tolerant of others, and other religions.

Paul - before you argue with me, history will *show* that this particular other religion has always interfered with other religions and attempted to destroy any competing religion, in any way, shape or form. It's a highly intolerant religion, more so than nearly every other competing religion that currently exists.

I've got no problems whatsoever with people voicing their opinions and in fact am a firm supporter of such.

I would have made very similar comment if it were directed at the Koran, the Torah, the Tipitaka and many others, I assure you that.

However there may be a difference between voicing an opinion and intentionally mocking others beliefs? Not that Ian did that. He may have been unaware of the fact many Christians do indeed take the bible literally, hence my comments. Perhaps they are the minority, I'm not sure but it shouldn't matter.

So for explaining this only and asking Ian to take it easy, I feel I prompted a few more negative comments about some peoples faith. Nice fellas, nice

There are plenty of artifacts depicting the Mayans and 'mushrooms', indicating they did use them in some way. If this pic is anything to go by, I'd put a bet on them using them for their physcadelic qualities.

To divert slightly but interesting (i hope), I believe the Spanish used to provide Aztec slaves with cocoa leaves to get them to work. Without this they would rather die at the hands of their captures. A very mild affect compared to what we do to refine that drug today.

If you were ever going to think of far reaching ideas through drugs, the mushrooms might be at the top of your list btw.

Yeah! I heard the same thing.
The version I heard was on Foxtel, Discovery (or Nat Geog) a month or two ago.
I actually posted a comment about it right here.

Funny thing was, shortly after I heard (totally unrelated) a Financial Analyst predicting another Global Financial Crisis about that time too. This one to be big enough to make the last one look like a picnic. Oddly enough, he said this would lead to Global Meltdown of the World Economy, and mass starvation, rebellions, anarchy, basically the end of civilisation as we know it.

Then to top it all off! Ruddy introduces his ETS. And that is surely going to finish off any survivors ! :P

The Mayans were pretty exact.
Notice the date. 20th of the 12th, 2012. !

Oh, and then there is the well respected scientists (name escapes me but I think I posted this here too) who are predicting the next ice age will be in progress, you guessed it... by 2012.
And here we are trying to stop Global Warming, by then we will be looking for all the ways we can kick it off again!!

The Mayan date relates to end of the "current age". Astrologically speaking. I think Christianity links the "end of current system of things" with the ending of one of these ages.

I don't care if it is true or not, but I intend taking some serious holidays (within Aust) before then, just in case. I plan on retiring from full time employment in 2011.

If they are all wrong, well, thats what the Age Pension is for!
If they are right, oh well, no loss. We were/are all going to sign off sooner or later anyway. Just the queues will be longer I guess?

However, I don't think any of it relates to the end of our lucky planet. I predict it will survive and generate a new life form to share with.

That's cool Jeanette, I can live with the mods doing their job - it's what they're meant to do.

Astro78 - I'm personally well aware that many people take the bible literally. Each to their own.

Anyways, back on topic - doomsday has been a feature of some religions for a long while. Book of revelations is the main one that I can think of for now. I'm not sure if the Holy Koran, or Tanakh mention it or not. Individuals have also done it, because they like the attention I personally believe.

I personally believe that apocalyptic events are a part of nature - as an example, asteroids, comets hitting the Earth (planet killers), etc.

Thanks for that Baron  . I will go back to my original question however, I will be more specific....

Mayan Indians: Text? Book?
Bible: Chapter? Verse?

Just interested and want to check it out for myself any 2012 references in any physical texts. I get these questions all the time and want to answer back with more than, "I heard", "Some tabloid mag or doco), or "somewhere in the bible."

Hey guys and gals, if I am not allowed to express my views on creation here (and I am not according to the rules and that's fine, it's not my forum.) then please have some respect and stop referring to my belief as fairy tales and poo-poo, etcetera et-al.

I and many other Christians are happy for anyone to find their own way and are not in the habit of telling you your beliefs are stupid. There are extremists and offenders on all sides of the fence. We are all just people. Some good, some rotten. We believe what we believe, can't we just be friends and leave it at that? I don't take offence, why do you? I quite like everyone here, regardless of their belief. You are all wonderful people in lots of ways.

I realize this is general chat, but this is an astronomy forum, not a boxing arena. Whaddya say? Shall we get back on topic then have a beer?

Peace, love and mungbeans baby!!

Baz I'm not a believer however I do respect your right to be

although the bible has mutiple references too the end of the world i don't believe it specifically mentions a date

likewise the reference to the Mayan text only refers to the end of their calender

As too Nostradamus, well the less said (text is open too any interpretation)

In all seriousness I predict it ain't going to happen

Agreed. I think it was Winnie Churchill who declared that ... "no-one ever lost money gambling on people's intelligence (meaning .. lack of intelligence)"

In any case, there have been so many translations of the bible and other texts, that it is probably quite impossible to deduce the precise meaning of much of the original text.

Hi Stephen & All,

If there are any serious takers I have a much better deal for you than Stephen.

On 21 September 2012 (3 months prior to the big day) contact me and I will agree to buy your (according to your belief) essentially worthless house for 50% of it's market value as assessed on 1 October 2012 and the transfer is made on 21 October 2012. I will allow you to continue to live there rent-free until 21 December. You must however vacate on 21 December. You can then use that freed-up capital to party your way non-stop all the way through until the world comes to an end on the predicted date!

But wait! There's more!! (sorry, no steak knives). If (in the very unlikely event) you are wrong and I'm right and the "end-of-time" does not come on 21 December 2012. Have I got a deal for you!

I will give you exclusive rights to buy back your property between 22 December 2012 and 21 January 2013 at 85% of it's market value as assessed on 1 October 2012 -- a saving to you of 15% on it's market value! If you do not take up the offer I will then sell the vacant property on the open market.

And what's in this for me -- well let's just say I'm a generous guy!

Come on! Take me up on it and enjoy the two month party of your life! What have you got to loose?

Best,

Les D

Man if I was God I would be ticked off with the current tenants... just check the condition report of how we found it and how we left it... we wont even get our bond back let alone a new property to inhabit.

AND so one mans reality is another man's nonsence... the key is to respect the reality others create for themselves even if it will not fit your own.

:) Too True.

One of my favourite (mis)quotes:

"God is not DEAD.
But ALIVE and WELL.
...and working on a far less ambitious project. "

NO Offence intended to anyone.
I respect everyone's right to see their ____ accordingly to their own point of view.
