With the Aussie $ at a high level compared to the US $, now is the time, I doubt if they will be much cheaper. Any visual observers who are not using a high grade eyepiece line (Nagler, Pentax, Vixen LVW) don't know what they're missing. I am just adding to my Nagler lineup - 22, 17 (still coming), 12, 9, 7. I tried the 7 and 9 last night - wow! All my old 1980's style eyepieces and the barely adequate GSO ones are now officially retired.

OMG! Pan 27mm down to $399 :eyepop:
That hole in my eyepiece case might get filled sooner rather than later!

I'm looking forward to my first night out with my new 17mm T4 Nagler tonight. Yum! Now have an all 82 deg fleet - 28mm UWAN and 17,13 & 9mm Naglers.

Hello Patrick,
How do you find the UWAN 28mm, in comparison to the Televue products?

Hi Paul,
I did a side by side comparo of the 26mm T5 and 28mm UWAN about 18 months ago in my f/4.9 and the UWAN was every bit as good as the 26mm T5. Was equally sharp at the edges, high quality construction, coatings very good. Very impressed with it. Cheap compared to the T6 too ... Would be proud to have one in my ep case.
Same night, I also tried the 16mm UWAN which was also excellent but I thought my 16mm T2 just shaded it contrast wise -- but not a lot in it really.
Best,
Les D

That's very interesting Les. I didn't know a lot about the Willam Optics lineup. The only other range I was considering was the Vixen LVW. I have heard nothing but good opinions on them. The usable extra width of field that the Naglers have, tipped the balance in their favour. It also helps that the Nagler range is so comprehensive, not many focal lengths are not covered.
And which case would that be Eric :lol::lol: you have enough toys

Forget yer pano's... yer 26mm t5's & yer william tells... all ya need in the
lower FL's is a 20mm t5 and a 31mm t5 :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: even a 35mm pano
with an ever so slight increase in FOV doesn't match a 31mm t5 ;)

Rob, I think the wife would shoot me if I lined up asking for a 31 t5 after ordering a 17, 9 and 7, plus 2" UHC filter, even at current prices. I hope the Aussie stays high and the Yankie low until Christmas, I might have a chance then.
Who do you order them from in the USA?

Hi Rob & All,
Well, provided the 35mm Pan or 31 T5 don't produce exit pupil issues in your individual telescope -- as it would in the Argus Panoptes.
See this thread here for a good discussion on the principles:
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=44225&highlight=exit+pupil
But that 6mm exit-pupil rule imposes a lower magnification limit on my 'scope of x76. Both the 31mm T5 and the 35mm Pan both exceed this in my 'scope and that is why my longest fl eyepiece is the 26mm T5.
Don't get me wrong -- they're both great eyepieces but with short f/ratios you could end up with an exit pupil so large your iris will effectively vignette the telescope aperture by 10 or even 15%.
The 35mm Pan would produce a 7.2mm exit pupil in my 'scope making an effective light loss of over 16% assuming I can still open my iris up to 6mm. If I can't make 6mm (I haven't measured lately), the loss is even higher!
Not good if you want all the light you paid for ...
Best,
Les D

If I wasn't busy buying astro software over the next Six weeks...I'd be investing in TV eyepieces...

Les has a very good point in relation to the effects of the exit pupil size, especially in reflectors. Really, anyone considering purchasing eyepieces would do well to read through the excellent information on the Televue web site, even if they are buying another brand.

Good to see someone else can share the blame for the storms and clouds. My 17 T4 hasn't turned up yet, I think someone on this site bought Bintel's last one.

Yeah I lent my 26mm gso to a guy about a year ago Paul and just never bothered to get it back, guess that means its retired to.
No more eypieces for me , but having a look through Robs pst
the other week is about to cost me.

I know what you mean Peter, my astro toys cost me a visit to the jewellers shop. I don't mind, we both win and that's important.
The weather looked a bit nasty down your way yesterday, how did you go?

What eyepiece was that Graham, his 31t5 or something new?

My 31mm t5 produces a 6.8mm exit pupil in my scope. So I'd say it would
be getting close for me at 42yrs. I've been having some visits with the
optometrist lately due to being diagnosed with PDS. On my next visit I'll see
if she can measure them. But I suppose this would be better done after
you dark adapt.
I'll go have a read of the link you posted. But I do know what your
saying and been prevy to discussions on it.
Still maybe why I prefer my 20mm t5/4.4mm slightly over my 31mm t5/6.8mm.

 a 31mm t5 wouldn't fit.
I generally use either a 12mm or 9mm U/O HD Ortho. But my fav EP
is a 10mm XW.

Graham, I see this is going to take some convincing  :D G'luck
I've finilly finished my new AN stalk, ready to send to Gary. Today I'm

Ah, that's what it is DUHHH!!!
I only looked through something like that once, well over 10 years ago. The chap who owned the cafe on Cliff Drive, Katoomba was a solar fanatic. My God, the gear he had - full aperture filters, high-end refractors, the works. We only went in for a coffee and ended up spending 3 hours there observing the sun. It was unreal!! Solar work has always scared me a bit, imagining smoke coming out of my eyeballs!!

Too expensive , even with a high AUD.
I'll never be able to justify spending that kind of money on any individual eyepiece.

It's annoying Peter. Our lawn is down to bare dirt in places, even the nut grass is dead.
The storms gather, look mean, warnings go out from BOM and as soon as they go much further north than Grafton, they wither. Had some cloud and light rain today but nothing outstanding. I'm glad we missed the storm late last night that was headed for Grafton, that sucker was black in the middle. General district rain is what we need.
Lismore Bloke
26-10-2009, 04:25 PM
Gee Kerrie I thought hard about an Ethos, but, as Les reminded me, you can get 2 Naglers for about the price of one Ethos.
mozzie
