More than likely created as a way to massively dumb down what CERN are doing so that the general public gain some (if somewhat, incoherent and idiosyncratic) knowledge of whats happening.. making it appear like its all fun and games, pointing out the significant things that could possibly be discovered etc.. And hopefully putting an end to all the hoo har about how CERN are going to destroy the planet, Nay, the entire universe with their piddley little particle accelerator..

Personally, I think we should make a ELHC (Even Larger Hadron Collider) on the moon... make it a good 1000km in circumference and really throw rather large bursts of particles through it... Get some serious collisions happening at near light speed and monitor it from the saftey of the earth!

The illusive LSD particle captured for the first time!

It's running rings around the other particles (pun intended).

PS Yes, I'm well reknowned for my very BAD puns

Your LSD particle diagram is flawed. :)

I see the observable affects of the LSD particle are quite pronounced on the scientists.

AlexN

It seems the accelerator is actually sending LSD particles out into the world... Seems people think that time traveling particles are sabotaging the LHC's LSD producing module...

CERN's on-line gift shop have these wonderful "The particles are looking back at me, M-A-N" and "Black Holes are fun" Tee Shirt designs.

No wonder this thing is not getting anywhere... all those bludgers are dancing instead of creating new particles

Yeah, reckon they should flood those problem rats out-a the tunnels.

Feynman would be turning in his grave with diagrams like that.;)

Its Ok Feynman... It was just a bad dream, Go back to sleep! :)

Heres my quick MSPaint drawing to make Feynman feel better...

:P I like my diagram :P

mine is (somewhat) accurate :P

However yours shows a hint of comical genius.. So I guess they both carry merit..

He would now be doing double somersaults.:)

As Crocodile Dundee might have said "You call that a Feynman diagram, this is a Feynman diagram!"

AlexN

yes well... Feynman is clearly no chemist... When doing a molecular diagram, I think mine is fairly accurate... especially considering I did it up in MSPaint.. :P

I dont think you could do a Feynman diagram of an LSD molecule, I am fairly sure you cant do one of any molecule? however I am no scientist.. Thats where you come in! :)

But he was believed to be an end user.

According to Genius, the James Gleick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Gleick)-authored biography, Feynman experimented with LSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LSD) during his professorship at Caltech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltech).[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Feynman#cite_note-Gleick-11) Somewhat embarrassed by his actions, Feynman largely sidestepped the issue when dictating his anecdotes: he mentions it in passing in the "O Americano, Outra Vez" section, while the "Altered States" chapter in Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! describes only marijuana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_%28drug%29) and ketamine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketamine) experiences at John Lilly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Lilly)'s famed sensory deprivation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isolation_tank) tanks, as a way of studying consciousness.[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Feynman#cite_note-Harvnb.7CFeynman.7C1985-13) Feynman gave up alcohol when he began to show early signs of alcoholism, as he did not want to do anything that could damage his brain—the same reason given in "O Americano, Outra Vez" for his reluctance to experiment with LSD.[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Feynman#cite_note-Harvnb.7CFeynman.7C1985-13)

mmm .... I choose to plead the 5th with regard to experimentation with altered states of consciousness..

You don't need drugs to get to altered states of consciousness. Just a well trained mind-body connection and good meditative practice. Drugs may get you there quick, but they muddy the waters.

Your own brain chemistry can do some wacky things.

It's not bad. Your h3c3 groups are actually h5c2. You also show some hydrogens specifically but others only implicitly. The attached diagram does the same. I think the reason is that the stereochemistry of sp3 hybridised carbon atoms can have different conformations (and the differences may be significant) whereas the sp2 hybridised carbons are constrained.

For the last week we've had a Tibetan Lama over teaching meditation techniques and an introduction to Tibetan Ayurvedic Medicine (will be teaching both here soon under license of the Sera Jey Monastery).

Over the years I've had some amazing meditation experiences; absolutely no need for drugs here either...except for Coka Cola...the "Black Aspro".

Meditation is not generally a reliable or highly effective path to altered states of mind IMHO. As an exercise/ practice in itself it is very useful.

Sleep deprivation is far more effective :)

Depends on the type of meditation you're doing.

AlexN

Meditate all you want.. The Maztech indians had it down pat... 300g psychotria viridis leaf. 600g caapi vine root, 4L water. heat, but dont boil until there is 500ml of water remaining. discard plant matter, drink, then begin meditaton... The next 5 ~ 8 hours will be very interesting..

Ayahuasca, peyote, psilocybin, ergot...whatever poison takes your fancy, will all do the same thing. But they leave you totally out of control of the experience. That's when it can be dangerous.

Okay....back to the video.....:D....

I thought it was great! Who cares if they are "dumbing down" the science to make it more understandable for the "average folk". It's all done in good humour and if anything, it's given a human face to the experiment they are conducting which is fantastic. Why does science always have to be so serious?

Good on them! Looks like a great place to work.

Thousands of eco tourists visit South America to do Ayahuascha retreats every year. Its becoming a huge industry and valuable income for the indigenous locals..

Yes, rats in the long tunnel - great danger. I have a European car (Citroen C4) I have had a mouse problem. Started with the windscreen wipers sticking on, then off, then on and I had to disconnect battery to stop them.:(
Took it to dealer - said cause was big mouse nest and they had been chewing the wires:mad2::mad2:
Now how about the LHC WOW, 27 klms of tunnels for the rats to breed in, all those millions :sadeyes:of wires to chew through.
Just imagine, we could all be blown up because a rat had gobbled up a Higgs Boson and short circuited it to a left hand spinning Quark:P:D:lol:
Better not let those scientists go into the tunnel with their sandwiches.

You're right there, Renormalised. He could put on A LOT of weight what with all those magnetic fields whizzing past. He might MUTATE into something horrible and then burst his way out of the tunnel and start throwing black holes at us. :mad2::mad2: Too awful to contemplate. Best to use that 27 klm tunnel to grow mushrooms in:D
