View Full Version here: : Stone Curlew Family
A pair of stone curlews has raised a family next to my garage, under one of the frangipani trees.
They are mainly nocturnal birds and their local name is 'screaming woman birds'

Nice photo Bob. Whenever I see these birds, the look in their eyes always seem to be somehow quite malevolent.

Wow, never seen one of these before (I guess not so surprising, since they're mostly nocturnal). I don't find their look malevolent - more hauntingly lonely.

If you are keen to see a pair in the flesh as it were, we have seen them at Currumbin in the large walk through aviary, just past the kangaroos, crocodiles and cassowary enclosures.

Nice birds...just wish 4500 of them wouldn't come around to my place at midnight and keep me awake with their squawking!!!!!

Beautiful birds and nicely composed photo Bob. Thanks for posting it.
I find it interesting to see what wildlife is endemic to areas other than my own (Central West NSW). Yep I know it's easy enough to find a book or to google such info but it's always much more fun to see photos from people who live there!
Kerrie :)
great find. they are a strange bird for sure!

I lived just north of Townsville for a number of years and in the summer nights about 10 I suppose it used to sound like someone was getting garroted up the back in the bush. One would go then another would answer .. all with this blood curdling sound.
Funny thing was .. it was loud and ya got quite used to it.
Great photo
