My one and only so far from snake Valley Astro Camp.

Great Orion Nebula:
14 X 2 minute exposures.
Camera: QHY8 OSC cooled CCD.
Telescope: Takahashi FSQ106ED at f5.

I know the core is a bit burnt out but if I can get some shorter subs I will fix this problem. I also notice a filter reflection on the bright star in the center of the image. and realised I have been using the wrong UV/IR filter.

Hope you enjoy.

That's a *lot* of detail for just 28 mins of exposure. A lot of faint whisps of nebulae structure there, well done. Image looks a bit Reddish to me though.

Tis nice mate! get some 10 min subs to really pull that dust out...

I really like the look of the colour, the running man looks brilliant.

Rather excellent image Doug

Great job without the Sidonio :P but I've given you some detail in the core and tweeked a few other things, please trash it if you wish just an experiment I thought you might like to see, your original is great

Looks great. How did you get the core data back from the posted version?

Is the dust the red stuff on the bottom of the image ???? If it is you can just snip that off.
Great picture anyway Doug.

The dust is all the brown stuff, and I think Doug was trying to catch the dust, not get rid of it ;)

I used Astroart4 to coregister an image of just the main nebula, I had taken using an 80ED and SXVH9, to Dougs then layer/blended just the core region in. It was of similar quality so blended quite well I think.

ahhh.... sneaky. I thought how the hell did he get data back from saturated pixels?

Man this has the potential to be an awsome image Doug. More data and the core subs and this would be pretty amazing. Another 4 hours and your image could be something very very special. I really like the scale of this image too. Shows the dust and gas really well.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Mike your efforts are appreciated and I wish i could get the hang of masking the core. I struggle with this process for some reason.

Thanks again

Stunning work Doug. You've come ahead in leaps and bounds with the FSQ. Such a forgiving imaging instrument, pretty hard to go wrong and fun to use. Well done.

Thanks Martin, I will post a higher res image on my website when I get some time. At the moment I am fighting with a termite infestation I came home to.

Thanks H, If I spend a little more time on the image I may find a bit more of the dust cloud to extract.

Thanks Jase, This scope certainly is a wonderful istrument to work with. It seems to captre the fine dust and detail much better than anyother scope I have had but the processing is again a bit of a ne world challenge.

I have put a higher res image on my web site of this image. It is about 2 MB so beware.
It can be found HERE (http://www.darkskyau.com/cm/displayimage.php?pid=222&fullsize=1)

Thanks Robin. Colour is always a tough one with DSO's so at times it is what we like to see. Hard to be truely subjective.

Really really nice image Doug.
And Mike, your repro was like magic. You can Sidonio my images anytime.

Very nice detail in there Doug.
It's amazing how much dust this region has.
I never tire of this area.

I apologise but i really could help myself Doug, i had to have a play....... like Mike said - if you don't like what i have done let me know and i will remove the offending image. i was trying to balance out the colour and get the dust looking like dust. Ahhh well ashes to ashes Dust to Dust, i am afraid that its got no guts......

Nice image Doug but pushed a bit too hard for the exposure time. Cost you a bit of richness in the colours. There's no subsitute for exposure time. Getting enough exposure time to have a strong enough signal to process is one of the great difficulties of this game. Lots of factors are against getting it - weather, patience, gear reliability, travelling to a site, time off work etc etc. As a rule it seems it is better to spend more time on a worthwhile object than imaging several objects in a night with short exposure time on each. Easy to say, hard to apply as it is easy to get enthused about imaging all the various great targets out there plus
having all the gear setup and working with cloudfree dark skies for a long time is a hard task.

Greg.

Thanks JJJ, Mike certainly did a nice job on the core. This is something I still struggle with.

Thanks RB, a very rich area full of dust and detail. It is a hard one with only a 16 bit camera. Dynamically It would be great at 32 or 64 bits but not going to happen quickly to us mere mortals. Worth spending some time on this area for sure.

Thanks David, No ed to apologise, it's a great way to learn. I was blown away the detail I was able to grab or such a short exposure. I will have another go at this one later when it getsa bit higher in the sky.

Thanks Greg, yes I understand what you are saying. It is always hard to get the correct amount of exposure for a given target. Something we have to live with but I will give it another go when it is a bit higher in the sky from home.
