I have just started in Astronomy and a friend has loaned me his telescope. He would like to sell it and now I would like to buy it. We are not sure what is a fair price. Could some one help me out please?
I have the following:
Vixen VC200L D200m f1800mm
Vixen GP Equatorial Mount
TeleVue 26mm and 13mm eye piece
Orion combined camera adapter 1.25
I would like to offer my friend a fair price for this. I took it along to a star meet last night and had alot of people commenting on it. It has a few scratches along the tube about 10-12 years. Apart from this its in good condition.

Scope - $1000
Mount - $1200 Add $350 if skybook included
TV - 16 and 13, could the 13 be the ethos? If Panoptics, $180 each.

There are no 26mm, 16mm or 13mm Panoptics.
26mm could be either Tele Vue original 26mm Plossl or 26mm T5 Nagler.
13mm could be either original Tele Vue 13mm Plossl or original 13mm Nagler (Type 1 if you like but not commonly referred to as such).
Check out Bintel for current new pricing but note 26mm & 13mm Tele Vue Plossls are no longer available and have been replaced with 25mm & 15mm Plossls (11mm also available). The original Tele Vue Plossls are excellent quality eyepieces and would be a fine addition to your telescope.
I'm sorry I cannot comment on what a reasonable price for the complete set-up is, I just wanted to clarify the eyepieces you may be getting. Check with your friend to confirm if they are Plossl or Nagler.

is the vixen GP a computersied mount?? if it is a older manual mount - or just one with some drives but not GOTO - i think it would be worth less something like $400-500

$1300 would be my bid (if interested in that package).

At the beginning of the year, I sold my VC200L for $1100, c/w finder scope, and in a fitted steel case. It was in good order, with just a few cosmetic scratches. No eyepieces or diagonal. I also sold my GP Vixen mount for $1100 a few months back, but it was complete with a SkySensor 2000 GoTo controller. The SkySensor was valued at $750, and the GP mount, complete with a fitted case, (basic, but sturdy) and tripod for $350.
I would think that if it hasn't got a GoTo facility, then anything between $1300 and $1500 would be a fair price for the scope, tripod and GP mount. I'm not sure what the eyepieces would be worth.

Indeed I was wrong here.
Rather than use Bintel as a price guide, I would suggest you use astromart.com and factor $15 postage to Oz. For second hand ep's that is.

I would play it safe and ask him how much he wants for the outfit .
If you offer him too little upfront he may well get upset , many here have unrealistic expectations on secondhand prices and are hardcore bargain hunters , keep that in mind when considering the suggestions offered by others . Do you want to risk loosing a mate over this ?
A vixen GP , a nice gem even it is not a GOTO mount. And VC200 is a special telescope.
