I was trying for a wide field of Orion early Sunday morning. Nearly every one of my focusing shots had an Orionid in it.
If it's clear tomorrow morning I'll just HAVE to set up the Gstar with the 4mm CCTV lens on it and see what I can capture.
Love this hobby.

Hi Nettie!
Let me know how the lens goes on the GStar,i have been poking around for one to do meteors with but not sure which way to go, have you had to pull hairs regarding this too?

:)

Not at all. The lens only cost $18 from Jaycar, so if it does the job, good.

Aswa had an astrocamp on the nights of the 16th and 17th of October a couple dys ago and we saw many an orionid with a -6 to -8 (Bright enough for shadows) fireball when I turned my head in the other direction. It may have been sporadic.

2nd last chance tonight Nettie! :)
Should be good!

You might want to watch a scary movie to stop you from falling asleep!

Good idea!
Though maybe not a horror movie, I live on my own now, and that would give me the heebie jeebies. I'd be too scared to go outside in the dark.LOL
No, I'll think I'll go alternative.
Maybe Rocky Horror followed by The Great Rock and Roll Swindle.

Hey.....
Have you ever noticed the opening lyrics to "Over at the Frankenstein Place" ?

In the velvet darkness
On the blackest night
Burning bright
There's a Guiding Star

How sad is that... I can find astronomy in just about everything.

If its not clouded out here I might pull an all nighter (have to work day shift tomorrow) to see how many I can catch.

Hmmmmm interesting, my ex-gf had a passion for Shakespeare sonnets, i can't remember the one she liked (prolly explains why im single again) something about "It is the star to every wandering bark" , i had to explain that a bark was a ship and thats how they used to navigate......by the stars! She had no idea......again may explain why....:P

Don't listen to Enya...that'll put you to sleep!

Perfect condition this morning 3am. Did not see any meteor for 35mins. Set the DSLR with 18mm lens on burst mode 30sec each. Pointed towards Canes Major.Checked them afterwards but not a single meteor recorded out of 200 shots.
Why!?? NOT HAPPY

Went out this morning 4:30 to almost 5:30
Was on the Oval in town and saw perhaps 12 Orionids.
I will see if the internal alarm wakes me up for tomorrows show, like it did this morning !

My thoughts are, the meteors weren't bright enough and were too fast to catch on camera......as i found out myself! It's more a job for low light video camera or image intensified camera systems.....

Keep a good eye out tomorrow morning!

Don't count just the bright ones, there were numerous fainter ones coming from the radiant as well, so if you have dark skies just keep that in mind! Good stuff guys!

BEST TIMES from my records 3:00am to 4:30am!

OBMY,

What would be the best part of the sky to point a camera and lens?

I went out last night and took a whole series of images, but, I haven't checked my exposures yet for any trails.

I looked out the window from my bed, and saw a Sat heading north-ish
to south-ish, to lazy to get up as I could start to see the dawn almost
begining to break. The Sat was bright and I thought it might of been the
ISS. Any takers on a comformation of my in bed observation, would of
been around 5-5:30am-ish

Cheers,CS

Went out from about 3:45am to around 4:10 local time. Saw a total of 2 so disappointed as my 12 yr old daughter wanted to look too. Got her up but she missed seeing any.

Still there are the Leonids in November.

Was out yesterday morning (22nd). Saw 4 Orionids and a "random". The Orionids were very fast and left a faint trail. It was very clear and Capella was blazing away to the North. It is fascinating to know that not that far above me was dust from Halley's Comet entering the atmosphere.:astron:

Up this morning (22nd) between 2.30 and 3.15 and saw a total of 11 plus another 5 sporadics. Three of the Orionids could probably be classed as fireballs. The brightest of these showed green and left a trail visible for about three minutes.

It seemed to me that the Orionids came in batches. I had to wait about 10-15 min before I saw the first and then saw four within a couple of minutes, another wait of 10 minutes or so and another batch of three or four. Is that the norm for the Orionids or just anomalies in the short period I was out there?

Hi all, i didn't get up this morning, i slept through 3 alarms!

From my observations i noticed that they did come through in batches, but still counted about 23/hr from the morning of the 21st.

The Orionids i imagine were not always "just" the big bright ones but many fainter ones which also came from the radiant were also taken down.

Its all good practice for the Leonids & Geminids coming up soon!

Cheers!

I have never seen or know what to expect to see with these nights other than the normal although greatly illuminated shooting star, looked very pleasing. I actaully view them between 1 - 1:30am as I had to get up early for work, saw about 6 of them during this time.

The only other thing I saw which I felt could have been illusions was specks of flashlights appearing. They were so quick I couldn't focus my attention quick enough. They almost looked like shower coming directly towards me no streaks across the sky.

Is this what I expect to see or is it more typical bright flashes across the sky?
