DavidU

My screen name was because of a distinct lack of imagination.:D
DavidU........ mmmmm
Now Strongman Mike makes sense, how did you come up with yours?

Tis my nickname!

RB
14-10-2009, 12:26 PM
Originally mine was "Rocketboy", from the movie "October Sky" and because I also fly model rockets.
Everyone called me RB for short, so Mike changed it.

So RB it is.

my given name and first letter of my surname - being really creative, it's in lower case! It came from a dictated email address yonks ago and it has stuck with me.

Of course, everyone thinks I am an "Erick"! No, it's the good old Norse "Eric". (Mind you, Erick and Erik are known variants.)

I should have gone for my initials ("EEK") with a few extra "E"s thown in:- "EEEEEEK" (No-one pinch it now - it's going to be my personalised number plate one day!

I have often been known as "Eccles". I have also had "Stumbo" (a painful childhood memory) and "Stork". I could live with the last one. A test of age - who knows where that last one might have come from?

when i was a kid watched bill peach's travel show on abc 'peach's australia' i think he used to start out with the memorable line 'australians are a nation of fringe dwellers' referring to our coastal living fetish of course, and adelaide is even more on the fringe - as the great GREAT PK once said at the arse end of the (inhabited) world :eyepop: metaphorically/geographically speaking of course

I kept forgeting whatever handle I picked as none had any relationship to anything so I selected my name backwards as most times I can remember who I am..and my name is on mail I get so I rarely forget it..if I have my glasses handy of course.... and when I cant remember my name or read it even with glasses then I should not be chatting on the net in that condition anyways.

Mine used to be the CB callsign I used when I was "picking up chicks" back in the late 80's, add to that because I am in Electronics/Telecommunications I always was taking crap apart and either Tim the Toolmanning things to make them have more power (like the CB) or fixing or disassembling stuff.

So there....

Cheers

My screen name is the same name as my Air-conditioning/Refrigeration company. " Coldspace".

It suits my business name as we make spaces cold, and it suits my Astronomy hobby as it is cold in space.

I was in an online racing club, where we would race V8 Supercars every week. We all ended up building our own simulators and bought steering wheels and pedal kits, etc. We all then decided that we needed to have cool names as a lot more people were jumping on line to play and there were too many Bills, Davids, Johns, etc. I couldn't have Megatron or Starscream or Optimus Prime as they were all taken by people I've never seen online at all, ever, so we came up with this, and it has stuck.
When my back isn't too sore, I still get on and have a few laps.;)

By the way RB, what a fantastic movie of strength, determination and self belief. Been trying to get a copy for my collection.

I used the name of a song by my favourite band, and some of their art work as my avatar. When I settled on the name I thought 'that's cool and people will wonder where I got it from'. Well within a few days on IIS I found out that Ric knew where it came from and I've since found that a few other also recognise the reference (Les D certainly does). So I probably failed on both counts.

Tacked some roman numerals on the end and found that worked so I use it.

Back when I first got internet access (around '96 or '97) I decided to try IRC chat, needed a nickname so chose the name of my favourite band, which is MrBungle.
It has kinda stuck with me ever since, tho now and then it's shortened to MrB.

Still my favourite band, and still my nick on IRC chat.

Edit: about time I got an avatar

I get called Nettie, or jnettie by my sisters, but that name was taken when I first registered on the net, all those years ago. So I tried jnettie, that was taken, so I tried jjnettie, no good, as a last resort I tried jjjnettie, and it worked.

As my surname is Barker, one of many nicknames I have had is barx, along with Woof, Doggie, Prof, Sheeptruck (comes from baa-car, my younger brother was Lamb Van!). When i signed up for the internet years ago the username barx at my ISP was still available, which was great as a short username is a joy to behold. The 1963 is my year of birth, which I am thinking of changing!

dpastern
15-10-2009, 07:09 PM
mmm - dpastern - d is the initial of my first name (Dave, David or Davo, whichever you prefer, I'm not fussy), pastern is my surname. Other nicks I've been known by over the years are mrtheoden (goes way back to my Diablo/bnet days), based on theoden from the Lord of the rings, and neonmagic, which hails back to my IRC days around the same period (late 90s), when I used to play online trivia. I haven't used mrtheoden or neonmagic in a long while - I pretty use dpastern for everything these days. Not original, but I don't really care!

Darren Mcgavin imo was a good actor and many of his time knew it .

Like Chris, mine was my CB radio "handle" combined with my age at the time I purchased my first computer. I used to drive around 'Penriff" in a black XB Falcon with BLOODHOUND printed across the windscreen, a six foot totem antenna off the gutter, topped with a real foxtail that I shot. I wore footy shorts and thongs and that was it. Dressing up meant putting on a flanny. To complete the picture I had a glossy sticker on the bumper that read, "Mafia Staff Car.":ashamed::stupid:

I was headed waaaayy down the wrong path at the time. Hopefully I am back on the right one by now....:screwy:

DistroMan
15-10-2009, 08:10 PM
I was given the name DistroMan because every computer in the house (there were 7, down to 6 now) had a different distribution of Linux on it.

Before that I was Night Owl (cd radio days) because I worked fulltime nightshift.

Before that was Greyhound because I was a skinny little b*****d in the army and looked quite strange running around with a mortar baseplate strapped to my back. Heavy little buggers.

Screwdriverone

Small world Baz,

I too was a local Penriff boy (well sort of, lived in the mountains, but Penrith was the "city" back then) and I am SURE I saw your Falcon around when we were cruisin' around Penny Panthers or High St etc...

Got a few goose bumps when I saw the "mafia staff car" bit because that's what popped into my mind when I was reading the Bloodhound, 6 foot antenna and the fox tail bit.....:scared:. I think the MSC was a legend around them parts...I remember having a chuckle with my mates when I saw the sticker on the car a few times.

Makes me feel kinda old now...sniff.

HA HA HA HA !

Now THAT is scary, I did all of that, with that exact phrasing, so I am thinking I am sure we did the foxhunts with you etc, especially at bottom Maccas. One time some guys (probably you) hid on the ramp to the old Walton's carpark and gave us a clue which made us find you in about 2 mins. Something about the Penrith Press sign which my mate's dad was the manager there so it was cake to find them.

So, YOU were the lonely YL, I hope I didnt pick you up@!! Although you would probably remember me as I am 6 foot 9 tall...had a gold Subaru Leone GLF5 coupe with a DIGITAL dash - what a CHICK MAGNET!

Spooooooky!

Yep! That was me! Wow, what a memory. Waltons carpark and I even remember that specific sign and clue that night. I was trying to use the concrete walls to bounce the signal in the other direction...too bad about the clue. Must have been somewhere between 1988 and 1992...

The most advanced I got in my car was the PA, the roof consol and the lightning plasma ball sunk into the centre consol. That car was MEEEEANNNN!!!

No, you didn't get tricked by me but there were many an unsuspecting trucky thought he was up with his luck until we dropped our voice tones an octave or ten!

Mine is just an abbreviation of my surname. Aka "seven-two" which I got many years ago in rescue... we had two Alan's in the unit, same spelling, same middle name, first 2 characters of the surname the same. I was on a search when my team leader had to leave and handed control to me. He was the communications officer and under the old system, his call sign was 7. 7.1 was the comms vehicle and 7.2 was the deputy comms officer, so I used that. It stuck. Even when I was rescue officer (3) I was still known as 7.2.

I friend of mine was in a big argument with her sister a few years ago. The argument went somethign like: "You're always out doing stuff with all your friends!" "All what friends?" "Al, Sheeny and 7.2..." :rofl:My friend couldn't keep a straight face, it cracked her up!
