Hi,
I came across an article relating to the 2012 hype the other day. It states that during the Winter Solstice (nth. hemisphere) of 2012, the sun will be aligned with the centre of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000years. This means that the usual energy that typically streams to earth from the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy will be disrupted - supposedly on 21/12/2012 at 11.11pm U.T. Probably sounds like a stupid question, but does anyone know if there is going to be such an alignment and would it have an effect on earth?

Long answer to your question is .... no it will not.

BTW ..... since the sun orbits the centre of the Milky Way , then it's aways aligned with it (the curve through the sun and the centre of the Milky Way is a line ==> aligned).

2012 is wholely and completely a work of fiction.

The only thing of significance that's happening in 2012 is the total solar eclipse that will be visible in far NQLD.

"There is no such thing as "alignment of the earth and the milky way". What does that even mean? When people talk about "alignment of planets" at least you can imagine two or more planets being lined up, like an opposition or conjunction, even though there is no astronomical term called "alignment of planets". I don't know who made up that Milky Way alignment idea, but it wasn't anybody who knows astronomy."
This "galactic alignment" was probably dreamed up by the "why did we bomb the moon folks.

I'm surprised that this event isn't going to happen on the 12/12/12 at 12:12. Jeez these conspiracy people have no imagination these days
...:P

On the subject of the 'alignment of the planets' I remember the great Dr Carl describing the effects of the last 'great alignment.' He stated that planet alignments change the gravity as much as a plane flying over-head at cruising altitude.

I was surprised not find reference to Mayans/Aztecs and or Nostrodomas...

I wonder how many people really do believe these things. Proportionally the figure is probably very low but for some reason people like to think that everyone else is stupid (not sure why) and so were happy to accept the media hype when they tell us there's heaps of raving lunatics out there panicking about 2012.

Quite a few, actually. But for the most part, the public are unaware of it and probably don't care unless it's brought up by the media. Then they don't know enough about science, religion, history and such to be able to make a decision on the matter and will just follow the rest of the crowd. I can imagine just what's going to occur after the pic "2012" is shown in cinemas.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to invite everyone here to my End of the World/Birthday bash on the 21/12/12. Drink as much as you like because your not going to live to regret it!!

"Quite a few, actually". How could you possibly know this? It might surprise you how often you might be taken in (following the crowd so to speak) by a media that loves to stereotype people as idiots because they know just how much we love to believe it.

Woo hoo, Julian's shout??

Hi Lorraine, and welcome to the forum.

It is a complete load of rubbish. Unfortunately in this day and age of the internet, this sort of bunkum can propogate so rapidly that it becomes "truth". Sadly, more people are probably ready to accept this as fact, than the Apollo Moon landings. :(

Here is a good article posted by Les in another thread: http://www.smh.com.au/world/2012-isnt-the-end-of-the-world-is-it-20091012-gtn9.html?autostart=1

How could I know this??...because I've spoken to quite a few who do and I've seen enough websites on the subject, forums etc, to know what people are thinking. No, that's one thing I'm not....taken in by the media. Nor have I ever followed the crowd, on anything for that matter. Never been your typical "Joe public" on anything. I take what the media dish out with a grain of salt. The public, by and large, aren't idiots (though some are)...they're ignorant and apathetic. They don't care for the most part and don't have the knowledge (or for the most part the education) to make informed decisions on things. That's why they get easily taken in by "experts" or swayed by the media. The big problem also being those people who are rightfully experts in a particular matter don't do themselves or their areas of expertise any great service by the way they act, sometimes.

Many folk are religious and if you look in the back of thier book you will find they look forward to a rather interesting end that way as well.

After meeting the crazy lady , a full blown astrologer, I found out by letting folk go on (and on) there are some strange ideas.. there is some reptilian alien race coming to get us did you know... I cant be specific because I sortta dont listen to that stuff... but when is going non stop you pick up things.

What I did learn is if you say nothing about your faith in science and let folk go you uncover some differnet views.

Where I live you get some really spaced out folk so you just learn to nod as there is no point in trying to change their beliefs ...

But as crazy as they all are they still think I am crazy so that is a worry.

Thanks Stephen and everyone else,
Told you it was a stupid question - The article Stephen recommended was worth reading. Don't misunderstand me I don't for one moment believe in the 2012 Doomsday prophecies, (our undoing will most likely be manmade anyway). I was just wondering if the sun does at any time line up with the centre of the Milky Way and if that could effect earth. According to the article Stephen recommended the sun will line up with the centre of the Galaxy on that date but planet earth will still be good to go.
Thanks everone, Happy now!

Carl, its a mine field out there. We all get taken in by the media from time to time. Theres just too many things going on at any one time to be on top of it all the time. And of course you dont think you're taken in. No one does. Thats why each of us thinks were so special. Because we think only the other guy is being sucked in. Look, how many people have you met that say, as you said "I take what the media dish out with a grain of salt". Everybody says that. All I'm saying is dont assume people are stupid just because there's always a proportion that gets taken in. Oh and BTW I have talked to lots of people too and not one of them believe in the 2012 prophsey.

There is an Aztec reference for 2012, believe it or not!

The Aztec culture is has remained a mystery for a very long time, with their circular calendar being one of the first items to be decifered. It terminates on (if I'm not mistaken) April 21, 2012. It is when they expected the return of their 'Sun God', or some other major entity of their's. There is a great deal of reference to 'help' in the formation of their technology from an 'unearthly' source. The scary thing here is the diagrams they made of this 'help': dead-set looks like an astronaut with a helmet & what we would describe as a spacecraft lander. It is this lander that most impresses me as the being's depiction would not be out of place with any other of their script characters. The lander has legs which resemble those of the Apollo Lunar Module.

Reference to this 'source' is made with how 'it' provided co-ordinates for the long distance alignment of many of their major temple, observatories, palaces & sacred sites, including their pyramids. The spacing between some of these structures being several hundred km's.

I'm not saying anything about there being an E.T. out there or not. I've got my own worries with a mortgage to care about some pot-bellied space farer. I'm just relating the translation of a very ancient set of text. This has nothing to do with the more recent Mayan culture, which was present & thriving at the time of Columbus discovering the Americas. The Aztecs preceeded the Maya by a very long time.
