Yep - but lost interest.

I have a 500 sitting here, with a 1200 desktop and 1200 tower.

I loved them back in the 80's. Simply the best OS at that time - and is still pretty good now.

I find the hardware a bit unreliable now because of there age I use an emulator with my laptop I wish I could get a new Amiga, a bit late now

Some of the later hardware is still used by many TV stations for video editing. There are a bunch of hardware clones now too.

I have an Amiga Emulator. I use it to play Technocop, Eliminator, Hybris and Firepower when I feel like time travelling back to the 80's!

Had a 500 - my first real computer!

Please point me in the direction of an Amiga emulator anyone!?

I loved some of the games back then - Speedball2, Godz, Chaos Engine, Magic Pockets, Harlequin, Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder - the Bitmap Brothers games were my faves though!
Memories!!

First computer I got was a commodore VIC 20 with a whopping 3kb of RAM  and a music tape recorder to boot :D to save my 100 lines of basic or so. :P I use MAME32 emulator to play old arcade games on my laptop. PacMan, Tetris, Donkey Kong, etc... Love'em. Reminds me of the school times when I use to spend all my pocket money on those machines and my mum's swift "back of the head" back hander.

Hi Multiweb, and All, :)

I did the same with MAME32. I wasn't aware that its still available.

I've kind of grown out of those games now. I used to have heaps.

Cheers Marty

i still run UAE, and play such gems as Alien Breed, Flashback, and The Eye of the Beholder. i had a 500, a 500+, and then an A1200 with a 20Gb drive!! oooo!!

My first computer was an Oric 1 (probably unheard of in Oz) it was in contention with the ZX Spectrum, but failed miserably, still, it got me codeing in 6502 and Z80, then started a career in IT.

I had a friend who knew very little about computers. He bought an Amiga in the early 1980's when I was into IBM's. He loved it and the games it played. However nothing I had was compatable so I never got involved.

My first venture into computers was with a National Semiconductors kit for their processor (I can't even remember the name). A friend who worked at the factory in Gourock (Duncan will know where that is) gave it to me to experiment with. I never ever got it to do anything but it filled in a lot of spare time while I was living and working in the area.

Absolutely loved the Amiga, LOL remember the Janus card for the A2000?

The OS was fantastic, great piece of work.

Ah yes the whopping 20MB drive, unheard of capacity, I told a friend of mine and he laughed at me saying "20Mb storage is impossible".

thanks RB, i stand corrected. it was indeed Mb and not Gb

Space for Workbench, and a few games

I'm with you on the 20Mb drive Andrew and Duncan :) I bought (at GREAT expense) an Apple Mac Plus in 1985 or thereabouts and a year or two later coughed up nearly the same again for a 20Mb Winchester. It was an incredible amount of disk back then, given the applications and document sizes. Brilliant!

No worries Duncan, I do it all the time, I'm so used to writing GB too.
MB is but a distant memory......pardon the pun.

....and a few pics....and a few animations....and....a few sound files...and...

Good ol days hah !

They were very expensive indeed.
I also remember the 2MB memory expansion cards for the A2000, massive cards full of 'roaches' and very expensive.

indeed, but fast RAM from an expansion added quite a kick from slow system RAM didnt it?

i still play "Dune" even to this day, if only for the music ...

infact i think i will listen to my C64 SID collection as i work today

Doug, UAE or Ultimate Amiga Emulator is the one I use and Duncan uses. Its a free download, just google it. The trouble is in finding ADF (Amiga Disk Files) which are the files that contain the games, as they are still copyrighted.

Anyone remember "Defender of the Crown"?

RB

Yes, a great game !!

And another that used to impress the visitors was Marble Madness.

You guys crack me up....

I had a C64, heaps of software and stuff for years, but I got the urge to finally "let go" and part with my machine and software a couple of years ago. To the bin (sorry), but had to go.

I even had a IBM machine running an 8086 cpu, until a few years ago...But that went too.

Even though it's tough to let go, I just didn't have a use for it any more.

And yes, I kept the C64 for just the game "Defender of the Crown". It was great after the sword fight, you got the girl and you slept with her....lol! What a game. ;)

WINUAE 1.6 is the one to get and the only thing that is still under copyright are the kickstart roms, workbench and 5 games the rest of the games are not
If you are after any let me know

So many replies are so similar to mine but I didn't end up in I.T.
I always wish I had though....

I started with a Z80 machine called a Vz200 from DSE and tore it
apart to learn how it worked. I had the manuals and circuit diagrams
and basically taught myself how one worked.

Then came the A500 and I did the same and even modded an IBM floppy
so it could be used on an Amiga. Remember the 880 k disk drives? :)

I used to fly flight sims a lot on the 500 and also had a Genlock so
I could digitise images and feed in a composite video signal.
My first video shots of the moon were through the A500 Digiview :)

Anyway...skip 20 odd years and it was all still sitting in the shed
unused but I couldn't bring myself to throw it all out.

I searched on Ebay to see if people still wanted these things and WOW
a few A500s were for sale and people craved the system disks.

I had the original OS disks and I had also bought the later OS...was
it called 2.0? Anyway, I had it , and the manuals.

I put it all on Ebay and got a few hundred for it all :)
At least it went to someone who valued it.
I even still have a working 1084 monitor that I use as a video monitor.
Still a good working tube after sometghing like 20 years :)

ps: forgot one thing...I also made a Weathersat decoder for the Amiga
which was an EA kit designed by Tom Moffatt....gentleman and terrific bloke.
I made his Wesat decoder and Wefax decoder.
The sat kit would pull in a live satellite pic from space right before your
eyes using an IF modified scanner (my Yaesu Frog9600).
I could have a pic start from sometimes the coastline of Antarctica and it would
drop out over Darwin.

Oh BOY!
Love SID music! Awesome.
I go through my SID collection every now and then.
The SID, being a true analogue synthesizer, is still going strong today. There are heaps of people using the SID chips to make 'modern' electronic music (techno etc.), do a search for HardSID ;)
There's also a list somewhere of commercial songs that feature or have loops of C64 music. Console's 14 Zero Zero comes to mind. (has the start of Wizball in it)
Awesome little chip that one, way ahead of it's time.
Martin Galways music for Arkanoid was pure genius.

Wish I didn't sell my C64 and all its accessories, atleast wish I had kept the hundreds of disks I had, there's heaps of programs I've never been able to find on the net. One in particular had awesome music, I think it was simply called 'Hires' :(

I remember those articles well, wanted to build that stuff so bad but I was still at school at the time and couldn't afford to build it :(
Loved the Moffat's Madhouse articles, had some real interesting stories that guy.
Hmmm, haven't we had this conversation before? ;)

I wasn't into computers then, they bored the hell out of me in those days. AmigaOS is still going I believe, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmigaOS

I personally don't see anything special about it as an o/s. *shrugs*

Yep Simon, we have ;)
You want the articles scanned and sent about the Wesat?
It's a very simple PPL circuit but I only have the Amiga software
and not the IBM 386 version.

Thanks Steve, but I still have all my old EA mags here.
Now I have a scanner that I can no longer listen to the police with, I really should dig those issues out.
I wonder if the SC website has the software?

Simon....you can use Wxsat and your sound card.
Remember , I posted a bit of a spiel about it here.

C64 was my first PC, but Amiga 500 shortly afterwards was a BEAST in its day. Used to go to the local Commodore Users Group meetings religously.

Miss my Commodores, but glad I sold them. I wonder what $500 for my Amiga 20yrs ago is worth now??
