JFK was awarded the Ambassador of Exploration Award from the Johnson Spaceflight Centre. It was presented to the President of Rice University during the halftime break between Rice and the Navy gridiron match. Rice Uni was where Kennedy gave his famous "To the Moon" speech in 1962.

It's a pity we don't have a president with Kennedy's initiative and push, now. Even though going to the Moon, at the time, was ostensibly done for "Cold War" purposes and the related national prestige, I still think that with someone like a JFK putting the foot down and making it happen, we'd be getting things done a lot quicker than what we are at present. Problem is, the U.S. government is full of "sad sacks" with little or no imagination, no spine and little initiative. People who are more inclined to feather their own nests and those of their business mates.

In any case, it'll be a long time before another politician receives and award such as this. Congratulations to the President, for showing the world what a little bit of courage can achieve, and a well deserved award.

President Obama is in a pretty invidious position, with economy in such dire straights and unemployment being so high, he would have to be very brave to spend Billions on the Space effort:(
Even though it could stimulate the jobs market and the US prestige:)

What the U.S. needs now, Ron, is someone with a bit of guts to take a risk and go for it. If you leave it up to the idiots that run things now, they'll only get mired in the same nonsense those fools got them into in the first place.

I remember that speech. Saw it many times "One of these days, to the Moon Alice, straight to the moon." Gee I dont think a politician could get away with that now days, not with all that political correctness happening.

Carl, after all the promise of the Apollo program, I was looking forward to the next step, a Mars landing in my life time:) but unless it is done by the Chinese, India,Europe, or a consortium of nations:thumbsup: I will have long left this "Mortal Toil" long before it happens:sadeyes:

So was I, but from what I hear, they don't anticipate being on Mars until sometime around 2050!!!!!!!:eyepop::eyepop:

I'll be 84 then, so even if I make it that far, I won't be seeing any permanent (or even "seasonal") bases there, myself.

I've always believed that JFK was a visionary beyond his time, and forgetting his promiscuous ways was the greatest US President of modern times.
