Filters for planets

Hi Guys,

Looking to place an order tomorrow for a filter to help with the planets and my toucam.

lists a baader ir/uv. I am swinging this way.

Would the baader be useful on all the planets ie venus, mars, jupiter, saturn???

There also mention some inexpensiive ones at around $60.

Also, can you use a baader in the 1.25" adapter and also say red for mars in the barlow??? Is this useful??

Interesting topic here.

For mars I've been using GSO # 96-0.6/96-0.9 & or a baader contrast booster.

They tell me the thing for mars is the IR cut filter, but not sure as to the advantages of this. True or false guys....better mars images with this IR cut or not?

Dave, does the toucam adapter has an internal thread? (I gather it does)

My baader screws onto any eyepiece, not sure if that helps determining weather or not a baader filter will fit your adapter or not..EDIT: sorry just realized you meant can U couple those 2 filters rather than if the baader fits the adapter or not. :o

yup internal thread and the 1.25" adapter has the same internal thread as the silver barrels of the eyepieces

Hey Yeah! I just checked and the TouCam adaptor does have a filter thread. Thanks Davo, I never noticed that before. Coooool!

Yes IR/UV is very helpful if you ask me.

But stay away from the cheapie one.
Your better off with a quality filter.

Just my 2 cents worth (inc GST).

I use the Baader UV/IR filter, but some of my best images have also been taken without it. If I understand it correctly the focus point for infra-red is sufficiently different from the red, and esp green and blue that if it isn't removed it will fuzz the image. That said, I think "seeing is king" and that if the seeing is less than optimal it may be hard to tell the difference.

For Mars, I've found the IR blocking filter is essential, otherwise the blue channel appears to have some light leaked into it from other wavelengths. At least that's how it looks when I split it into separate RGB channels.

And as RB said, a good quality one is essential. The baader seems to be quite good, and at only $80 is good value.

I don't know if you're strictly talking for imaging or visual, but Dave47Tuc used a red filter for Mars, and at times a light blue as well. Both appeared to bring out some good detail in the image that was otherwise washed out by the brightness. But like all planetary observing, the best detail was brought out by just waiting, and looking, and waiting, and looking. Your eye will adapt to the brightness and when moments of good seeing come, the detail jumps out at you.

The best view I had of the night was in Geoff's scope when his pentax was fogged up and it dimmed the planet enough that detail was jumping out at me.. ignoring the bright halo around the planet because of the dew, it was a simply stunning view when the seeing was great.
