Hair dryers

I searched the group for information on 12V hair dryers, but the only supplier I found was Five Island Marine in WA and the thread was a little old.

Has anyone recently purchased/found one? I have tried the usual Aussie Disposals, Kathmandu, Rays, JV etc to no avail. I am in Melbourne.

I don't use a hair dryer as I have the Kendrick heater system and so have never had my optics dew over. I did hear one of the suppliers at the Qld Astrofest once advise against using them, (hair dryers), as they may "bake in" any deposits on the corrector plate of an SCT.

I think this has been on this site before? be prepared they use alot of power, they don't take long to flatten a batterie, get yourself a dew removal system, you wont regret it.astroron :thumbsup:

A dew removal system doesn't de-fog EP's. I found Birds hair dryer perfect on my EP's at camp!

:) Ken you can get 2" and 1.25 inch heater belts for a dew controller unit ....bewdiful especially when theres theres a big nagler {or pentax :P } to ptrotect

Hi Ken

The Kendrick system has eyepiece heater strips (1.25 & 2 inch) as well as secondary mirror heaters for Newtonians.

I did once forget to turn on the dew heater for my 4" refractor and the objective eventually dewed up. I turned the Kendrick unit onto maximum power and the dew was removed in approx 15 mins.

I have also used the heater strips on a 24mm wide angle lens on my 35mm SLR with no dew shield fitted, and the front element stayed dry even when pointing to the zenith on the wettest of nights.

The downside is the expense, the plethora of cables and the need for mains power.

I purchased a 12v Hair Dryer from Ray's Tent City on Bell St, Preston about 18 months ago. They should be still avaliable. The only problem with mine is it stop work about 6 month ago so of I whent to BATSC and purchase a Kendrick Dew zapper.

They usually call my telescope a 'microscope' after tellin' em' 28 times what it is..not sure who's the nut here, lol! :wink2:

You know, I was looking at my reflector today and it occured to me that in fact it is a large microscope, it collects light and using nothing more than a mirror reduces that light to a pinpoint, where we then use a microscope (EP) to interrogate that pinpoint of light.

BTW, I am currently (no pun intended) designing a very cheap and so far effective series of adaptable dew heaters for both my ETX and 8X50 finder scope using a series of ceramic resisters, they working well and extremely low current consuming, I just need to package them so they look tidier, when I do I will publish the plans for them and you can make your own. Total cost for my finder so far is under $5.

I rang Carac and they do sell them, but are out of stock at the moment. They are going to ring when they have some more. They are not far from my house so I can just pick one up when it arrives, otherwise postage could be comparable to the price if I get it interstate.
