Some people on this forum have probably already seen/read this book but this is aimed at the beginner.
I have just purchased a book called "The Backyard Astronomers Guide" by Dickinson and Dyer from Dymocks book store cost $50. I highly recommend this book for the beginner and probably the more advanced astronomer aswell. Everything you need to know from what to buy for your needs to setting up the scope to photography is covered in this book.

I wish I had discovered the book a year ago it would have helped answer some of the questions I had asked on this forum.

OK so you beginners out there if you haven't got the book yet Christmas is coming put the hint in now.

Seconded,
I proposed this under "must-haves" for newbies a couple of weeks ago.
While heavily oriented toward Televue gear,it gives useful tips about brands to buy and more importantly NOT to buy and why. Also its clear, concise explanations on how to set up a GEM, its beginners guide to astrophotography and the chapter on "Finding Your Way Around The Sky" were worth the price alone.
