IIS Red Screen option

Hi I am sitting outside my backyard, laptop running on my 750W inverter and WIFI connection to my ADSL modem inside the warm as toast house.

Thinking about this lovely cool night my eyes are being flooded with blue and white screen of IIS while waiting for the moon to rise fully.

Wondering if the website moderators or developers could look into an option for red screen for IIS similar to www.calsky.com (http://www.calsky.com)

This is not a major problem for me now as the moon blinds me as well, but was thinking good option if I decide to do deep sky and want a break.

I run an app in the background called Niteview

While it does its job well with every other astro app I usually
have running, ie scope control/planetarium/ image capture etc...
it does not redden the browser window of IIS unfortunately.

Maybe there is a plugin that reddens the suite of web browser softwares?

Mal, if not, why not cut a piece of red gel (thick cellophane) the same size as the screen. You can get it from stage lighting suppliers

IIS runs css file which forces all text to behave with certain colours. It only seems to affect raw html or equivilent.

I may still use it on occasions.

Even if you have a red night screen on an application eg The Sky 6. you are still getting white light. The most effective way is to use a red gel screen.

I will be ordering a few of those soon. can put them on my headlights of the car when driving out of ASWA events.

My laptop screen is so dim that I dont require any sort of filtering... If i turn it down to the lowest brightness level and enable night vision mode in MaximDL, its actually hard to read because its so dim... Its good and bad in a way, it means that I cant process images on this screen at all, but at the same time I can be at dark skies without the need for a light filter...

If you use a Mac there is a free program call "DarkAdapted". It works a treat.

Any screen that used a "red" night view screen still has white backlight coming through. The simplest way to get rid of all white light from a computer/laptop screen is to use a red gel filter. However if you are imaging having a red screen may not be as important as visual work

Maybe a pair of sunglasses when the gel comes off. I occasionally while waiting for things to happen wear my sunnies when going back inside with the family.

Just another thought...
I found that there are various "grades" of solar film that is used on car windows.
The "shades of grey" seem to work a tad better than the red.
It allows you to "see" all the text/objects, no matter the colour. :)
They always have a few off-cuts floating around in the bin, so cost is nil.

I noticed this thread and hope I can contribute. We have been running an option on our forum for a couple of years to do this and it is very useful. I use it all the time in my obs. Basically we have a "night vision mode" option for our members when they are surfing our forums (one click of the mouse).

IceInSpace uses the same forum software as MyAstroSpace and I'd be happy to email the files over. It would just be a case of uploading them to the server and the option would be enabled (you'd also need to change the colour of the IceInSpace banner at the top, but that would only change in night vision mode).

Thanks Raydar but that wont quite work. It may be the same forum software but it's certainly not the same style. CSS from another site is not something that can be plugged in and expect to work. We're in the process of a redesign at the moment. I'll be adding a red theme, it's no big deal.

But as someone already mentioned, a "red theme" is not red light as such, so the effect is not as good as actually using a red filter over the screen. A red theme is merely darker - better than white but not red, night vision friendly light.

But if you guys want red, you guys can have red. No worries :)

Like Terry said, we'll include a red theme in the redesign if that's what people want, but if people are out at the scope observing, a proper red or ND filter will do a much better job.

After using couple of programs i have decided to use Red filter instead, it is difficult to get all the windows zoned unless the program is specifically designed for it.

No problem. I still use a red filter on my computers as well (inside my obs and inside my home). I had dark red plastic cut and bent to fit my screens perfectly, works a treat. I agree there is no substitute for that.



With the CCS import, you should be able to import the CSS as a theme. The templates would revert back to a default status though (only for the red screen mode), but those can be edited so that your left and right columns reappear.
