I've started a data base of unprocessed images here. (there's only one lonely image there at the moment)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/astro_jjj_unprocessed_data/

Whether you're considering getting into astro photography and want to test the waters before diving into the money pit, or you've been clouded out for the last 4 months and just have to have a processing fix, you can download some data to practice on.

If you'd like to share some of your images with others please PM me.
They don't have to be of the highest quality, just good enough to practice with. Nor should they be full resolution, I'd like to keep them under 4mb. Preferably saved as 16bit .tif files.

If you do download an image to work on, it would be great if you could place a link in the "comment" box to your finished image with a bit of blurb describing how you went about your processing.

JJJ, this is an inspiration.

I have not imaged for a couple of months due to personal issues and I find that I forget the processes if you don't consistently practice and use the skills learned.

JJ they are small files

??? I downloaded a couple of the larger files and they were only 50kb

Hmmm, they were around 3.5mb when I uploaded them.
I'll look into that.

I think this is a great idea! :)

I've avoided the idea of getting into AP, simply because I don't think I have the skills, the patience, and the dollars to spend to find out!

But a resource of data, and maybe some tutorials on the basics of processing the data, would make me think about putting my toe in the water!

Cheers

Jeanette,

Great concept!
Don't know anything about astro-digital processing but I'd like to experiment on the images anyway.

JJJ,
Fantastic. You're a star!! I've lots of PS experience but none with astro-imaging. Really looking foward to trying my hand at it. Great idea:thumbsup:
Thanks loads.

I have a Sky Drive account I set up for the members of our Deep Space Imaging group with this very idea in mind. I put them all into .rar files with the flats and darks to be downloaded to do it all yourself or you can choose a calibrated image and just Photoshop it. These are full rez though. Do you want the link JJJ? I have heaps of spare storage if you need it.
Great idea for IIS though!

Hey JJJ Great idea! Can Mike S assist with loading them on a section in IIS?

Thanks.
There's teething problems though. But it shouldn't take long to get up and running.
I know when I first started off, I would have loved to have had access to this sort of data.

Great idea JJJ,

I was always too scared to go down the astro imaging pathway, because of alot of skills and time to learn.
This would be a great way to start without too much fuss and if I like it then I might give it ago once I get bored with the Mallincam.

Apologies. Didn't mean to steal the show - great idea btw. Its not what you know, but who you know. ;)

Also, be sure to check out Jim's processing tutorials. Has some nice work on inverse masks in photoshop.:) Perhaps a bit "old school" compared to what can be achieved in PS CS4, but still very effective.

JJ some less experienced might want to cut their teeth on simple TIF files or large jpeg images so don't give up on your idea

Processing LRGB files takes a little bit more know how

This is a great idea JJeanette. If you are having problems with the larger files I can provide some web space and create a database/server to store images for download.
Let me know if you need this space and Database etc. It will only take an hour or two to setup and then you can manage it easilly.

Thanks for the offer Doug.
ATM I'm going through a bit of a crisis, and this is going on the back burner for now.

Sorry to hear that JJ. I can put something together and set it in motion if you like. Overall it should be almost self managable but I don't want to in effect steal your idea.
I can keep you informed of the system and give you the management passwords etc and do the initial management until you are ready to look at it again.

Your thoughts??

I don't mind if someone else wants to run with the idea.
TrevorW has offered space on his pbase, but the files would need to be too small.
4mb would still allow a useable size image to process.
Maybe if you two had a chat about it. It's all too much for me atm.
