The Running Man and my QHY8's first night out

Goaded into action by AlexN, I ditched the DSLR last night and gave the new cam it'smaiden airing. This is a crop from an M42 that I got a bit carried away with in the processing. The image is 16x10minutes through an 8" Newtonian with MPCC. If I can reprocess the mauve out of the M42, I'll post it a bit later. Right now it's just a bit psychadelic.

Nice Peter! great definition, theres a slight hint of guide error, but focus is spot on!! Colour balance can be a pain when you move from a standard DSLR to either a modded dslr or something like the QHY8.. there will inherently be a lot more red/pink/purple hue to the image.. At least you've got some data to play with!

Good on you for pulling the camera out of the box mate! and a nice image as a result!

Now there's a compliment: my colourful image has turned you to monochrome. I am not entirely sure whether that's a good thing or not!!!:lol:

woah somethings a miss there.. In dss, under fits/raw settings, make sure camera is set to qhy8. Also, in your capture program, make sure its saving raw data. We'll have a look in a couple of weeks!

That would explain it!

I'd try enabling "Per channel background calibration" in Deep Sky Stacker. This will align the red, green and blue histograms once stacking is complete.. it makes life a lot easier when it comes to colour balance at the end of the day...

Hey Duncan. Good question. Debayering?? Isn't that something you have done to your cat? I'm afraid the extent of my sophistication in terms of processing is "Open DSS. Load images. Press big button that says 'Stack' then go to PS and have a play with levels, curves, colours and a bit of saturation followed by an unsharp mask. I was recently introduced to the "Shadow/Highlight" option in the PS image menu and that is what led me down the garden path of psychadelic colours. But I must say in defence of the wild colurs, that it did bring out a level of detail that I wasn't getting otherwise.
Now back to your question, no my cat is OK thanks.
