Barlows and Eyepieces

I am new to the hobby and had bought a Kelner 25 mm 1.25 inch eyepiece which was described in a four letter word by one of my club members. I was thinking to buy a Tele Vue 2 x barlow 1.25 inch retailing at $125.00. Does anyone have an opinion on my choice be it four lettered or not. As can be seen the choice of items to buy can get a bit overwhelming. And I cannot see how the likes of Bintel etc. can allow you to try before you buy.

Hi Tom, not sure how much my opinion can help as I'm knew in Astronomy too. However I got my TeleVue 2x and I found it a reliable option when you want to increase the view. Honestly all my eyepieces are Bintel's brand (32/26mm 2", 25/15/6mm 1.25") as at the moment I don't think to invest in expensive accessories since I've just started to watch the night sky. I believe I will not notice any difference with more quoted EPs considering the entry level Telescope. After all with a reasonable price I got my good view.

Hi Tom,

welcome to IIS. Anything Televue will be fine. I have the same barlow myself as well as an assortment of TV plossls. These are all great eps and will be noticably better than the cheapies that usually come with a scope.

As you'll see, TV offer a huge range of different quality eps, all the way up to the legendary ethos range - which of course we all aspire to.

What's your current scope?

If the barlow is only to compliment the Kellner, I would delay the purchase until you have more ep's to use this with.

I have a 120 skywatcher f5 refractor. I have a lot of eyepieces borrowed from the club the best one being a 6mm Plossl. I have gone ahead and bought the Barlow along with a TV 20mm EP. I will see how all this goes before going upwards. Thank you to all who advised
